It is always best to specify what year and model you are working on. I randomly pulled up the PET for the 1983, so it may or may not be applicable to your specific car. at any rate if it differs, look at Illustration 813-00 of your respective PET. Those are referred to as BOWDEN CABLES. I think Item 37 (quantity 2) in the below image is what you are looking for.

You're right I fixed it. And thanks for looking at the PET. 37 can be bought, but the cables coming out of the control unit don't seem to be available or show part numbers in the PET.

you can use piano wire. it comes in gauges from a number 13 (thinnest) to 22.
talk to your friendly neighbourhood piano tuner; he will have some.

LOL. How would that work. There is a wire inside and it needs to slide back and forth.

i don't but it will be one of the higher numbers, maybe the highest.
they will have it in spools and can cut off a length for you.
maybe you can bring a short sample or measure the thickness of what's on the car now and get the closest match.
it is good wire and far better than anything you will find at a hardware store.
hardware store wire - snare wire? - will bind on the inside of the outer sheathing when you need to push on it.

for a 78 you should have the 6mm OD on the cable housing. there are 2 different lengths 800mm and 1080mm (associated part numbers below:
911-613-111-70 (800mm)
911-613-111-80 (1080mm)

If you should happen to have the 5mm OD housings which should have ended in 77, the part numbers would end in -50 and -60.

Food for thought:

I needed the wires with one of my previous 911's (1986) Not sure what the previous owner tried to do... I needed it fast and found a used one for very cheap.

The one listed above might be your year...piano wire would be a ton cheaper I imagine. Pretty sure I have heard of some using piano wire with success. It wasn't a normal wire if memory serves, but nothing special.
