Ignition Upgrade Question

OK 2.2 MFI engine. I have (Thanks to Ebay) an XR 700, a Permatune CD and a Crane Hi 6 and a msd. I only want to do this once, so here goes.., What would you guys do? XR with Hi 6 or maybe the Permatune and maybe a MSD Unit at the same time?

I would do the wiring for full flexablity.. or settle on one flavor and buy a back-up..........Ron

I have XR700 with optical pickup with high performance coil. Nothing more, works just fine.

Alan Cottrill 07-03-2003 11:29 PM

put the xr700 back on ebay.

keep the optical trigger if it came with your xr700.

which hi-6 do you have?

if it's the hi-6s put it back on ebay. it's an Inductive system.

if the box says HI-6 or HI-6r install it immediatly with the optical trigger. this ignition is a mutliple spark CD ignition. see crane cams website for a side by side comparison with the msd. you don't need the xr700 for this installation.

otherwise...

put the permatune on a shelf in your garage.

install the msd, buy a petronix ignitor to trigger it, and start looking for a msd tach adapter because I think you'll need it if you want your tach to work.

at least thats what I'd do. Good luck.

I'm with Ron on the back up idea and Alan on the Crane HI6.

I use the HI6 CD box on my 2.2 MFI with the Crane optical trigger and coil. Crane tech support is very good, check out the installation instructions on their website.

You can use the XR700 to trigger the HI6, but it's just one more part to install and worry about, IMHO. Get the correct trigger for the CD and go right to the HI6. CD is a big advantage, driveability is much improved with CD ignition. (I used the XR3000, then changed to the HI6 CD. Less plug fouling and much smoother at low RPM.)

My tach still doesn't work, however...

Thanks folks. I have the optical triger, Alan are you saying I don't need the xr 700 control box it came with???

The HI 6 is the multiple spark model

724doorE 07-04-2003 07:21 AM

msd and stock points with msd coil. works great! tach works too!

Alan Cottrill 07-04-2003 09:56 AM

here's what I'm running and am very happy with...

crane HI-6 multiple spark cd unit
crane optical trigger
crane LX92 coil

thats all you need...

all of the HI-6 units are multiple spark, the HI-6s is an inductive discharge unit while the others are a capacitive discharge.

the hi-6s is a good budget friendly multi spark box but doesn't pack the punch of a capacitive discharge unit.

pl69911 07-04-2003 01:29 PM

Thanks guys..

Is the Crane optical trigger the same as the XR-700?

Thanks.

trivia,
I stuffed plenty of electrics on the left side.. it's not a pleasant site for the purist, but WTF.
It's not complete and the engine is out, but the game is good MSD feed and easy diagnosis & maintence. [long story]
and of course as bullet proof as possible...........Ron

Nice setup you got there. I'm looking to put in my MSD soon. I got the 6AL box and tach adaptor and the XR-700 (installed) but no instructions... :(

Ron, I did and a whole mess turned up. It's confusing as to which tach adaptor I need, etc. 8910 or 8920.

I have to search through my parts again to make sure which I have, but I definitely one, just not sure it's the 8910 or 8920. What's the diff?

I have the 6AL box, the tach adaptor lying about. The Crane XR-700 is already installed by the PO. And instructors are sure eluding me.... *groan*

Ron, Ron, Ron...

I don't follow.... You're 35? And how old's your friend? If he's daughter is in college, she's 18? So he's about 40 and over?

Sprint, turned 26 in July!!! :)

the tach adapter is 2 options.. for points, which I have, is 8910

the XR-700 I don't have.
SO some notes from other members is

"I have the Crane XR700 installed on my car, along with the MSD6AL. Bought the tach adapter as well, ran the black/purple wire straight to the MSD unit and it runs perfect..
"A Quiet Boom" 9/17/02 says on XR 700, I installed one of these units on my previous 2.0E engine. It's critical to make sure that the pick up height is set such that the shutter is right in the middle of the pickup so that it can't float into the pickup and be damaged. I test ran mine and found it was rubbing on the top of the pickup so I of course adjusted it a little lower. need MSD 8910 tach adapter with points.. msd 8207, or 8222. These are both high vibration coils with 45 to 48k v. output. The 8222 will mount in the original position. The 8207 which I prefer will have to mount by the ignition"

Thanks for the tip on the pick-up.

And yes, I have a new 8207 coil waiting...
