Show me your narrow bodied early hot rod!

Please!? Looks like the PPI on the 1970 911T I'm looking at came back fine...so I'll have a new car in a week! Of course, we can't leave well enough alone, so I'm already dreaming about what kind of "hot rod" to turn it into. I'm thinking...for this one...a narrow bodied, no fuss looking lightweight ala Bob Tilton's beautiful machine. Anybody got any suggestions? I'd love to see them!

AFIC, put 15 x 7's on it and lower the car. Those look like deep sixes to me and I would save them. I don't know what kind of seat that is, but seats are a big part of the "look."

You might loose the overriders and maybe put a fiberglass bumper on the front. Again, I'd keep the original on a shelf. Exhaust is another way to hot rod an early 911. If you do something crazy back there, keep the parts.

If you end up with FG bumpers on both ends and they don't sport deco trim, the side trim is useless. Put a stripe on it. I'd personally have a hard time with the color, but if you like warm colors, you could 2 tone the car with some yellow or gold (or derivatives thereof).

Bolt on stuff is the key to saving the car's value. You can spend the cost of the car again underneath where people don't see. But, it will then drive like a hot rod.

First, as with any newly acquired car, replace the rubber brake hoses, and flush all the fluids out and replace - brake, trans. & motor oil.

Second, replace all the rubber in the suspension - every piece of it. You can use the Wevo spring plates, Elph. parts etc. But something new has to go there. Replace the rear banana arms with ones from a Carrera. You can do the front Xbar too & put Carrera stuts on it.

Replace the shift tower with one from a 1985 on up - I think that's the year with all the good stuff on it. There's a Pano article on it, but doesn't say exactly what improvement that year has. Rebuild it first & rebuild the shift coupler or replace with a better design.

You have now essentially taken a Carrera and placed it beneath your body shell.

Third - keep the fabulous road racing shift pattern 911 transmission - get the Al plate for it and do any rebuilding and other mods to take higher hp from the new engine you are going to put in.

Fourth - a new, bigger, more powerful engine of some sort. (I used a modified 3.2L).

Fifth - Replace the headlights with H1s or a xenon type.

Get back to me after you have another $40,000 to dump into the car, and I'll come up with some more stuff...

its a want to be hot rod... not quite there yet, but getting damn close.
its motor has been rebuilt, and should have a bit more spring in its step than your average 912. it only has 230 on the rebuild so far, and the difference is noticeable.. but i cant take it over 4000rpms until its hit 1000 miles so i havent been able to see its full potential yet. once its fully broken in i can see what it can really do.

ive decided to put off doing the rear bushings and lowering it for now. the height is too high for my liking, but im going to just wait until next year to do it so i can have the suspension completely gone through all at once when i can afford it. later this year ill probably find new wheels.. either minilites, american mags or gasburners.

seats will come when i can afford em, so will r tail lights and turn signals.



on your car (after mechanicals etc are addressed), 1st I would remove the bumperettes, and change out those headlights for H4's or H1s. its easy stuff and it will definitly improve looks. however, i would not throw anything away or sell it. keep all the oem stuff off the car you take out. after that the slippery slope begins with body stuff. you can put on driving lights, hood mounted cibies, talbot mirrors, r tail lights & turn signals, sport seats.. go so far as to make the T an ST with flares and so forth..
so many things can be done, and this board and the early s board are great places to get some influence.

I really like the way the car looks now. Especially the T trim and the deep sixes. What color is that? It looks metallic but I can't tell. Is the color original?

The only thing I would change externally cosmetically, at this point, would be would be the headlights and horn grills. Put on H4s' and chrome horn grills.

I'd spend my money on the suspension first. Motor second.

In other words zing before bling.

Then after you get the car sorted if the color has not grown on you by then or you are bored with it maybe go for something like this. One of my favorite early car 911R look.

Some notes:

Oil and tranny fluids were changed during the PPI. Brakes were determined to be good.

The car already has a 915 with short shift. I did not test drive it, but went along for the ride and did not hear cubby911T crunch one gear.

The first thing to be changed will be the seats and belts. Right now, the car has very narrow Corbeau racing/sport seats. They pinch my lower back. I'll be replacing them with early racing seat replicas. (Stay tuned for that...) Belts will be updated to more modern retractable type.

Doors will get early RS panels. Rear seats will eventually be removed. I like the steering wheel just fine for now, but I may get a hub adapter to bring it a little closer to me. We'll see after I've spent some time in it.

I actually have H4 headlights with chrome rims...so those will go on pretty quickly. I also have new chrome horn grills and better front turn signal lenses. Those will probably make an appearance as well. I may spot for some new US spec (all red) chrome rimmed rear lenses as well, just to finish the bling.

Love the 15x7 wheels, but these are nice so they'll stay for a while. Plus, they have new tires on them. But eventually I WILL get wider rubber.

FYI the paint is not original, but a metallic version of the original. It's not a very good paint job, to be honest (you can probably tell by the interior shot...look at the door jamb, etc.). Eventually, it'll get new paint and a new color. But that's down the road a bit.

For sure I'm planning on plain fiberglass front and rear bumpers. Probably won't get those until I can afford to repaint. Again, this is my inspiration...



As for mechanicals...right now I'm just interested in maintaining what's there. Ultimately, I'd love to find a "damaged" 3.2 Carrera and replace everything underneath with the newer goodies. But that, too, will be down the road as right now I've very little money to play with.

I will keep original parts. I actually have SC/Carrera flares, but I'm holding back on that idea because I think I want to keep this "returnable" in case somebody wants to in the future.

Of course, if I do all the things I want to it, this will be my car until I die....

The destiny of your old car has changed 3 times in the last month without even being seen in person. There have been three great Pelicans whom I trust that made offers to adopt the car and give it the life it deserves, but I was unable to arrange a shipping handoff due to my work schedule and the timing of losing my storage space in KY. Its a very strange and aggravating set of circumstances.

I only got to look it over for about 30 minutes back at the end of Feb, but to say that Im attached to it would be an understatement. I have no storage for it currently and losing my storage in KY really put me in a bind. I aboslutely hated the idea of getting rid of this car. Last weekend the wife told me to bring it home and finish it whenever. Im happy to report that the car will be coming to Baton Rouge in the near future.
