Extra Serial Number
I have a 911T 1969 in Australia, and above the VIN Plate there is another small plate with BS AU 48. Does anyone know what this is for or refers to.
Also my engine number is 619 2459 however from all information I can find 1969 911T engine numbers were from 619 0001 through to 619 2455. Any ideas?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...schenumber.JPG |
Welcome to the board. Don't forget to check out the Australia/NZ Regional Forum for events and fun runs!
I'll bet the BS AU 48 is something to do with a specific configuration for our country. It certainly looks like an add-on. Maybe it's affixed by inspectors once the car arrives in the country, or perhaps it's added by Porsche distributor staff? Don't know what to say about the engine number... Post some more pictures of the car! |
I was guessing AU might be a code for Australia and maby the 48 is the last 2 digits of my VIN which is 148. However I had a suspision that it might have been a UK car after finding a 1970's british rail ticket under the dash. I have spoken to the Ex owners wife who said they had the car since the mid 1970's.
Anyway here are some pictures of my car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Picture 002a.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Picture 001a.JPG |
Aussie,
When we imported a container load of cars in the early 90's. A 1988 VW van and 2 old BMW's, the Van had to have an ID plate supplied by the Customs and Excise dept - before the Police would register it. It was an engraved plate and had all sorts of numbers, some of which mimmic the Vin #. These were private imports. One of the BMW's was for parts, the other has never been registered since arrival, so I am not sure what would happen for them (both early 70's cars) I suspect your additional ID plate might be the result of a private import. A guy who would know would be Paul Blank at AEM in Perth. He is one of WA's most knowledgeable car nuts. Try Paul at info@classicrally.com.au Regards Hayden |
Welcome Aussie
It is indeed interesting that your car is only 3 numbers away from my car. What is the colour of your car, Ossi Blue? Mine was delivered to Melbourne new in January 69 and was also originally Ossi Blue. It has since been repainted Arrow Blue. I've checked to see if I have the same plate, but I definitely don't. Cheers |
My car was originally Irish Green. I'm planning on getting the car stripped and some rust fixed, but not sure on going back to the Irish Green or mayby Silver, Orange or Red. I change my colour choice every day of the week.
I havent found out if my car was Australian Delivery yet, is there anything to look for which ill tell me? How long have you had your car for? |
I was lucky enough to get my car with it's original hand book and service book (this identified it's point of sale as Hamiltons Melbourne). This meant that my mechanic (ex Porsche Germany) knew where to find a cardex and delivery docket for it. Most of the details he was able to source from Melbourne Porsche (the old Hamiltons?).
Given that our numbers are so close, I can't help but think that your car may be an Australian market car that was perhaps picked up overseas and used by the owner on some kind of driving holiday or such, before being transported home privately. That plate looks "factory style" to me and may have been attached to facilitate the easy importation of the car on it's eventual return/arrival to Australia. I nearly arranged to buy my BMW bike in Germany just so I could take a riding holiday around Europe a few years ago. Apparently BMW has no problem with this (they just keep a bike destined for Australia for your pickup), perhaps Porsche did the same back in 69? Perhaps a call to Hamiltons/Porsche Australia may throw some light. I've had my car since 2000 when I bought it for myself as a wedding gift! |
Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volvo still do the European Delivery Program to this day. I've heard it's a blast, getting a tour of the factory, running in your new ride on the Autobahn etc.

Hi again,
I was just looking back at the posts and had an alternate idea. I had assumed the AU was for Australia, what if it was for Automotive? I searched for BS (British Standards) and in a few minutes had the answer. BS AU 48 introduced in 1965 is "Specification for seatbelt anchorage points" If other Australian cars dont have this badge and you found a BR ticket under the seat, I would guess the car was imported out of UK, ironic that an Australian car is within a couple of numbers though! I suspect the RHD line at the factory moved pretty slowly in those days. True about the appearance, the factory probably had to add the tag before the car could go into the market with the relevent design requirements. Regards Hayden |
Good sluthing Hayden!
I'd say that's your answer Simon, you have a British import. Certainly is a coincidence with the chassis number though. |
Thanks for that Hayden, where did you find that information.
I went to Porsche today and had them looking for me and ringing people and no one there had ever seen one either. Thanks Again:) |
Aussie,
I went to http://bsonline.techindex.co.uk/BSI2/Dir1/sitepage.asp?LS=&PgID=0000&LR=&LD=&Src=&Dest=&Last =&SessID=C65HPG7H3KBE9MTK0ALQWEP3P56XBPP9&MSCSID=& ErrID=&SessStat=&Parent=&Child=&PCount=0&LogStat=& URLData= Not sure if all that URL will work, but when I was there, I entered BS AU 48 into the box on the left hand side says something like "enter under standard #" Then up came BS AU 48 and BS AU 48a (1971>). I still would not be ultra certain it was a UK import, but seems more likely than not. It would be interesting to know if the Australian Vehicle Design regs were in any way parallel with the BS? As seatbelt laws were pretty scanty at the time, it may be the label was not essential for import into Aus by Porsche, or private. Therefore cars destined for UK get the label and could still legitimately get redirected to another RHD market like Aus? Just speculation. I recall in 1969 it was big deal when my father installed aftermarket seatbelts in our HG Wagon (Stock from Holden had a lovely Chev 307 small block and powerglide), he also fitted avante garde Pirelli radial tyres....
