engine-gauge sender match?
I put a 3.2 into a '77. The temp gauge reads high but I'm wondering if there's an mis-match between the engine temp sensor and the stock 77 gauge. Does it matter?

Hey Mark... I saw your email. Do you have a picture of the oil temp/press gauge? I'd also just confirm that the 3.2 has the original sender (they are usually silver versus the earlier brass type).
Technically a 77 should have the same sender as the later 3.2 cars

Yes. The gauge and sender must match.

Had the same issue and switched the sender so it matched the gauge. Problem solved

According to PET:
901-741-632-00: 911 1965-69 901-641-632-00: 911 1970-76, 1978-83 (SC) 911-606-112-00: 930 1974-89, 911 1977, 1984-89. So a 3.2 temperature sender should match the '77 gauge, as the esteemed Mr. Bell notes... However, '77 pressure gauge (0-140PSI) wants a 10 bar pressure sensor 911.606.111.XX, same as SCs and early 930s. After 1984, everything looks to have switched to 911.606.135.00, which I believe is a 5 bar pressure sender (so that oil pressures looked higher on their matching 5 bar gauge) Here's the page from my '77 handbook: ![]() And a picture (not mine) of a '77 Carrera 3.0 gauge - identical to my '77 911S gauge, same scales on both. And the same unpopulated fitting for the Sportomatic temperature warning light at the very top that puzzles so many without a Sporto... ![]()

Also, all the pressure gauges went from 10 Bar to 5 Bar after 77.

PET drawing 101-05 "crankcase" for years 65-69 lists part #64 "temperature sensor" as 901.741.632.00 for -68, and 901.641.632.00 for 69-. PET drawing 101-05 "crankcase" for years 70-73 shows part #65 "temperature sensor" as 901.641.632.00. So same as 69-up. PET drawing 101-10 "crankcase right" post-74 shows part #28 "temperature sensor" 901.641.632.00, with 911.606.112.00 indicated for 77-up motor types 911/81/85/94 and 930/02/52/53/54. So it's actually 69-76, rather than 70-76. PET drawing 101-10 for 75-77 Turbo shows part #28 as 901.641.632.00 - so that is also the same. 78-up PET drawing 101-10 shows part #28 as 911.606.112.00, with 901.641.632.00 indicated for "SC", with the remark "SPM" - which someone more astute than myself observed almost certainly meant "Sportomatic". (It's always been unclear to me what that "SPM" annotation implies - does it mean "unless Sporto", "Sporto only", "you might have a Sporto"- what, exactly?) PET drawing 101-10 used for 84-89 also gives part #24 as 911.606.112.00 - so the 3.2 temp sender is the same as '77 911 and 78-up 3.3 930s. And I believe everything else post-68 - eg 69-76 911s, 75-77 930s & 78-83 SCs use 901.641.632.00 So I believe from that the SC sender 78-83 is 901.641.632.00 - and should be compatible with 69-74 911 temperature gauges, or gauges from the 75-77 3.0 930s... Because, otherwise, if the SC sender wasn't different - then everything from 77-89 would use the 911.606.112.00 sender. The logical extension being that SC and 3.2 temp gauges and/or senders would Just Work if you swapped them around. And plenty of folks seem to indicate they don't read correctly if you do that. So the corrected listing would seem to be: 901-741-632-00: 911 1965-68 901-641-632-xx: 911 1969-76, 930 1975-77, 911s 1978-83 (SC) 911-606-112-00: 930 1978-89, 911 1977, 1984-89 911 (3.2). My PET gives 901.741.551.01 for "pressure transmitter" 65-73, 911.606.111.00 for 74-77 (including 930), 911.606.111.01 for 78-83 and 911.606.135.00 for 84-89.

Yes, that all looks correct now. 69 is indeed the same as 70 so 69-76 sounds right for the temp sender.
The 901.741.551.01 and 911.606.111.00 are both 10 Bar senders but I think the fitting is different. In 78 they went to a 5 Bar sender.

As the only difference between the listed 74-77 (911.606.111.00) and the later 78-83 part (911.606.111.01) is revision number, I'd expect that they would interchange?

That would be too easy... if you look up pictures of the 00 it's marked 0-10 BAR and the 01 is marked 0-5 BAR.
Also, all of the 74-77 pressure gauges are 0-140 PSI or 10 BAR They don't make this stuff easy ![]() Sent from my SM-G991U using Tapatalk

The early pressure senders used a small base fitted above the oil pump and in 74 still using the small base pressure sender was moved to the fan area. 75, I think, went to the larger base 0/10 atm. Including the turbo and the 3.0.
The chrome temp sender started in 77 through the Carrera. You need to match the temp sender to the chassis year. Long ago, companies offered a package with matching sender and dash instrument.. 5 bar started for 78 model year, chrome sender was 77. Bruce |
