Please help me identify this on my engine

I was working on my 1975 911S, with stock 2.7L, trying to identify and stop several small oil leaks. I found one leak on a bolt on the driver's side of the engine case. I saw that a previous owner had put two crush washers on the bolt and oil was weeping down the shaft of the bolt. I removed the nut and two washers. I replaced with a correct aluminum crush washer and nylon nut. As I tried to torque the bolt to 25Nm, I could not get to the correct torque. I found that as I tightened the nut, it was backing out the stud from the case. When I realized this, I stopped tightening it. I double nutted the stud and wound it back into the case. I did not remove the stud from the and it wound back in easily. I have no idea what this stud attaches to inside the engine and now I'm concerned that I've disconnected something. I decided not to run the engine until I seek advice here.

I have attached a photo of the engine and the stud/nut in question.

Can someone please tell me what this stud attaches to inside the engine. I have not been able to torque this nut to the correct setting. What should I do?

It's this stud. It holds the case halves together. I would leave it alone until time to split the case and rebuild the engine.

Yelcab,

The stud in question is the longer one in the back. Just behind the intermediate shaft and oil pump drive shaft shown in the picture.

One of the items I had fixed when I had my 2.7 case split. Case savers installed along with a number of other items. Cost is not for the faint of heart.

Thank you all for the replies. I will leave it alone.
