Two months ago I purchased '83 911SC. Car worked fine until a few days ago when I had Circuit City install a new stereo, and that's when the problem began. First the installer had the stereo power hooked up to the turn signal (so whenever the turn signal turned on, the stereo turned off). He then rewired it so that the stereo get power at the first turn of the ignition. Everything seemed to work fine for few days until one morning when I tried to start the engine. At first, turning the ignition all the way, I see the usual red seat belt light come on, hear the buzzing of the fuel pump(?), but engine doesn't start. After a few more attempts, I cut the wire that (I think) powers the stereo. After that, when I turn the ignition, no red seat belt light, no bussing sound, only the warning sound when the key is in ignition. I have rewired the cutted line. I tried to jump the car this morning but same sympton. Car has Alpine alarm system, but PO has disabled it by disconnecting the cable under the car seat. Has the factory alarm somehow disabled the car ignition? Please help.

No, I am not getting power to the solenoid. When I turn the ignition key, I don't hear the buzzing sound.

you gotta get under there with a test lite on the yellow wire connector/at the sol.. if it's the alarm starter disable you won't get a lite on .............Ron

also.. a 911 starter is fun to play with.. the heat that's generated in that area does "things" to the solenoid.. the sol grease gets caked up and prevents the slide.. the heat may also expand the sol tightning up the slide clearance for the somewhat routine hot start problem.. then there is a convoluted route your yellow wire has to take to get to the sol from the switch/many connections.. and an alarm disable sol is usually a smaller gauge wire unit adding to the fun.. I'd probably do a jump from the large starter feed to the yellow wire and then track down the possible problem and do a quick starter & sol internal clean-up.............Ron

Please excuse me while I am stepping onto my soapbox. (Cannot help my self... too may years as an Electrical Engineer)
One of the biggest issues I have with P-Cars is so called "professionals" who try to install radio, alarms, cell phones etc into 911s. I have seen wiring harness burned up in the tunnel. When I parted out a wrecked 86 Targa, I noticed someone missed drilling into the tunnel's fuel line by less than 1/4". I have seen a CD control unit 'mounted' into the door panel, thus destroying it. Why must an Amplifier be secured to the smugglers box with sheet metal screws? Be kind to your car, have a local Porsche expert install a radio, alarm, remote CD unit etc. The kid working at a Circuit City shop may be OK for a Honda, but not a Porsche. OK, I feel better…. Off my soapbox for now. To avoid further damage to your 911's wiring, please consult with a reputable Porsche shop. |
