1979 930 VIN and
Hi Everyone
Wasn't sure where to post this type of question so please excuse if I'm in the wrong forum. I recently had the opportunity to purchase a 79 930 for mid $50's but seller only has a Lemon Squad report which admittedly looks good, but I really dont value that type of report as a PPI. He also sent me a video walk-around but neglected to start her up and let her idle. The location of the car is about an hour and a half from Dallas and I could easily drive up there in 1.5 hours but I really know very little about the 930 although I have rebuilt my Carrera 3.2 a couple times (2nd time to fix what I did wrong the first time!) Bodywork looks extremely nice, interior has strange Recaro seats (almost movie cinema type) and steering wheel is mid 80's. The VIN he gave me is 10 digit 9309801088 which seems valid but I'm not really sure what these 10 digit VINs tell you TBH. The claimed mileage is < 10K but that seems very suspect to me. The Lemon squad mentioned possible respray. Geez, I'm struggling with what to do. Seems like almost to good to be true and I cant get the guy to let me take to get a PPI as it's 100+ miles from closest reputable place like Mayo or Zims. Should I go and take my lead-down and compression tester and check it myself in-situ or just dream-on ? Any thoughts? Anyone have any prior knowledge of this specific turbo. BTW, it's Guards Red and Black interior Thanks and regards from big-D

It sounds too good to be true, and you seem to be already noticing a few red flags. Just be careful. I'd try to see the car in person.

Thanks for the reply. Good suggestion. Its still available as far as I know so may go there and just check it out. Not sure whether I could do a leak-down and compression test in his facility but I can ask. Wonder if anyone has any other ideas for an on-site eval of a 930?
Will let forum know what I find

VIN checks out as a late '79 930. Bring your tools and do your own PPI. Take it for a drive. Bring some overalls so you can crawl around and look underneath. Ask for service records.
Mid-50s is waaay below market value, so be careful. On the other hand, you could get a smokin' deal. Good luck! |

The Horton Classic Car Museum in Nocona, Texas, which housed a collection of over 120 classic cars, closed permanently in February 2023 after the passing of its owner, Pete Horton, and the collection is now being auctioned off. https://www.mecum.com/auctions/houston-2023/collections/the-horton-classic-car-museum-collection/ I just saved your 53 grand.

^ How so? The 930 isn't being auctioned, it's for sale separately, isn't it?
BTW, it looks way better than $53k... |

Danger Will Robinson!!! Considering what pieces of crap I’ve seen sold on bring a trailer, mid $50s is way underpriced, for the supposed condition it is.
For that price, and 1.5 hours away, I’d make a beeline to look at it with cash in hand. Googling the VIN, it comes up with one place in Texas selling it. No other links. https://hortonclassiccars.com/listings/1979-porsche-911-turbo/ Last edited by A930Rocket; 03-26-2025 at 06:26 PM.. |

This isn’t even a good attempt at a scam, you shouldn’t fall for this.

Everyone, thanks very much for the speedy replies and suggestions. After re-reading the description there is a comment about $40K worth of maintenance and records which might offer some clarity into where the car has been for services etc.
Anyway car may have already been sold but will keep you up-to-date Cheers

Well, if the 930 has already sold, you can pick up the ‘65 Shelby for less than $37k.

Wouldn't that be nice

If the seller will actually let you look at it and drive it, and see the title, and it's in his name, that eliminates most of the online scams. Otherwise, I would not give it a second thought. Too good to be true.
