FD Question
 

Today I pulled the gas tank from my car and started the POR-15 treatment to remove all the internal rust (the amount of rust is significant). No wonder I have gone through 3 fuel pumps in the last four years. I stuck my finger in the screen hole and I could literally scrape the rust out (it was about 1/4 inch thick. I applied the cleaner provided in the POR-15 kit and all the junk kept coming out. I will be coating the inside ot the tank tomorrow night after I apply a metal etcher and dry the tank. Given the significant amount of rust in the tank, is it likely that the fuel distributor may also be coated with rust? I pushed the sensor plate lever up and when I released it, the FD piston did not come down (I could tell by the lack of resistance when I tried to raise the sensor plate lever a second time). Is this behabior normal since the fuel system is open and unpressurized. Should I consider opening up the FD to clean it while the gas tank cures over the next few days. Any ideas are welcomed. First, buy a new tank (ebay). Much easier and less frustration. You will never know if you got all the rust out. It will always be in the back of your mind when something else goes wrong. Second, run and bleed the system a few times.

p.s. If you do not get a new tank. Try throwing some nuts, bolts, and even nails in the tank and shakeing it around. You will see some big ole chunks of rust then. Count the nuts, bolts, and nails before you put them in the tank. LOL.
