car sat for over 1 year (no starts)
Looking at purchasing a 1984 911 that has been sitting for over a year and never been started or moved. What problems will this car have? I would imagine engine seals would dry out among other problems. What other problems should I look for on this car? (wont start needs battery)

Was it stored a year ago... or just parked? Was it sitting outdoors, or inside?
Fuel goes bad, and oil collects moisture.... tires rot... belts rot... lot's of things...

Replace the battery and try starting it up. Why was it park for a year?

Check for mice's nest on your cooling fins. My car sat for 2 years and had that. If I had just plain started it iI would have over heated it real quick.

Before starting, remove the fuel filter. Then remove the brass fitting off each end of the filter. Use the filter as a 'special tool' to remove the 22mm screen nut on the bottom of the tank. Drain all the old gas and clean the tank fuel screen.
Then remove the tank level sender on top of the tank. Inspect the condition of the tank. Install new fuel filter and the cleaned tank screen. This will help prevent clogging the injectors with old gas. |

Anything up to a year is no big deal. Was the gas tank full? If so, check for rodent nests, etc. as advised and start it up, warm it up and then change the oil and all filters. If you plan to test drive it, check the brakes carefully to ensure they're working correctly. If the tank wasn't full or it sat much over a year and a half I'd consider Mr. Smolka's advice on checking the tank. Today's fuels are really pretty stable but anything much over a year is suspect; and a year isn't really long enough to allow seals, hoses, tires to deteriorate much. Of course, if you purchase it, be sure to bring all the maintenance up to date (like any used car, you never know "religious" the other guy was) including flushing the brake system as soon as possible.

My 911 parked for 5 years. You need to drain the gasoline completely. Not top off. Spray some WD40 in the cylinder head through spark plug hole. You can try to turn the engine manually to see if the piston rings are O.K.
My first mechanic toll me he will rebuild the engine for $6,000. I bring the car to the second shop, after $1,000 tune-up, the engine runs like new. Not even oil leak. One year is nothing, engine seal will not dry after one year. My '87 still have original seal, not leak.

in my old boat yard days we would see alternator bearings sometimes take a flat spot if the belts weren't relaxed before storage.. it would need a few hours before making noise..
