Ignition timing a 2.4T with Webers

Hi,

I would like some advice on ignition timing.

I have a 73T with Weber IDA's. I'm running what I believe to be the standard distributor. This has the advance retard facility but I'm not using it, as the Webers have no port for it.

What effect will this have on the idle timing? I've current set this at 5ATDC as per the book.

Or would it be better to get full advance and just see where it ends up.

Also what would be the effects of leaving the vacuum port unplugged? Would the timing be effected?

Thanks
Mark

Go for full advance @ 30/32° and then your idle timing would be somewhere around 10/12°. Lots better performance there. Your idle mixture screws will need to be readjusted and idle speed set @ 1000.

Hi John, what's sort of rpms would I be looking at for full advance? 5k ish?

Also when you say 10/12 I assume that's BTDC?

So, with this information I'm guessing my current timing is well off?

Raise the Rs until it stops advancing. That's total advance. Set your timing light to 32 and raise the Rs until it stops advancing and shows tdc on the pulley is another way. An analog adjustable light display is steadier than a digital one.

Thanks John,

I've got a gun that you can set the amount of advance and just line up the TDC mark. I'll give that a go tomorrow.
