Paint thickness gauge
Can anyone recommend a paint thickness gauge? The kind used to determine if there are body repairs when buying used cars.
Seems like if you need one, it might as well be a good one. |

Industrial coatings were a big part of my career, we used DeFelsko Positector 6000 or similar.. be aware these cost like $900
There are numerous available on Amazon, but I doubt they are near as accurate as a Positector.. However you don't need a lab grade industrial tool to find body repairs.. Also some only work on ferrous metals, for cars with aluminum or composite panels you need an Eddy current style detector..

It occurs to me that I should have been more descriptive.
What I really want is a Bondo detector. Will these things show bondo as crazy thick paint? |

Use a magnet for that . . but yes this will show variations in thickness whether paint of bondo. You can tap with your hand and find filler too.
