Clutch Feel: G50 vs. 915 Tranny

Is there much of a difference in the feel of the clutch on a G50 (hydraulic) and a 915 (cable actuated). I'm looking for my first 911 and found a really nice 86 coupe, low miles, well maintained. When I drove it, I was somewhat taken aback by the clutch effort. I can't be that much of a wuss (my legs are strong from mtn biking and running). I don't expect it to be like a Honda, but is that normal? Does the helper spring fail often?

yes. It does fail that often. Mine was bad on my86 when I bought it. Replacing it makes a world of difference.

The helper springs fail all of the time. The G50 and 915 do feel totally different. When I was looking for a 911 I test drove several 915 cars, to me harder to get used to, but I actually really liked it once I got used to the feel, to me it was kind of like a compound bow, hard at first, and then easy once in. The G50 is pretty heavy, all of the time.

A 915 with a new clutch, PP, TO Bearing, New Helper Spring, New Clutch cable does not require a lot of force. A G50 that is need of a clutch & clutch shift fork update can feel heavy.

I think if both clutches are adjusted and lubed properly they feel the same. I just did a G50 conversion on my car and there is no difference that I can tell. Both clutches feel great. The G50 shifting feels better however

How much did the G50 conversion run you? I would think quite a bit. And what did you have to swap over to the SC? Did the tranny mate right up, or were some mods needed? I would LOVE to have a G50 in my SC.

The cost was about $4.5k. I went the machining the bellhousing route. I found out that the tranny is still to long to fit in an SC and the motor needed to be moved back a little. I had to change the shifter. I had to put a hyd clutch in. I had to mod the thottle a little. Would I do it again. In a heartbeat, but I might go with coil-overs instead of machining the bellhousing next time
