Catalytic converter blanket.

I got a new Magnaflow cat for my 88 Carrera. The cat design is pretty robust and is a solid tube (no heat shield included) and is larger than the OEM design. But, it is pretty close to the valve cover and head. I am concerned about retaining heat, so close to vital engine parts.

I see that you can buy heat resistive blankets that wrap around the cat and are held in place by pipe clamps.

Has anyone have these installed? Do they seem to work and are worth the purchase?

Two things come to mind. Those heat blankets can hold water against the whatever on an exhaust system. Can you fashion a shear metal plate between the cat and the valve cover? Air space can accomplish a great deal.
