starting problems

1978 SC 3.00litre

I hope someone can help. I have a frustrating problem with my 911. i turned the ignition key and heard the fuel pump but starter did not turn. i had the starter overhauled and replaced. the first day out the same problem occured. i returned to garage and checked the starter. no problems. happened again and returned the car. tested all day and started without problems. left for 2 hours and problem re-occured. waited 1 .5 hours and car started again. after 15 min drive the starter failed again. car starts when it is cold.?

can someone please suggest alternatives?

very frustrating problem.
thankyou for a very useful forum.

Grounding straps! Clean all grounds, especailly the one going from the transmission to the firewall (under the car, right by the sheetmetal of the rear seats. It's right up above the transmission crossmember). Just a guess, but it's free and may be the problem.
