3D Printed Wheel Caps

Got a new set of Maxilite Fuchs (very nice, actually) and I needed new wheel caps. My car came to with me three different kinds of wheel caps somehow and $50 each seemed excessive for new ones. Plus, I wanted to try a different look.

The caps are printed in resin. It's a nice tough and heat tolerant material but the plastic does take a set quicky. The quality out of the printer was so good that I didn't even sand before painting. The resin taking a set meant that the locking tabs became loose quickly. I added an ABS printed ring the keeps those tabs firmly in place. Working for far.

As for the look... concave just looks better to me. Feels a little more race. Just my preference.

I'll clean up the 3D files and post here in case anyone wants to use them.

These are great!
What print resin are you using and do you have settings (screenshot) you can share?

Smart move on the mixed media types (abs/resin) for the solve on the plastic setting.

Resin for the caps below. The FDM printed ring is actually ASA. Very similar to ABS.

Setting below for my old Photon S printer. Newer style resin printers should be able to go faster.

Also the goop in the photo of the backside of the installed cap is a little silicone. Probably not needed as it is a tight fit but it’s a little insurance to keep it from popping out.

I’m def interested in the files! But I only have FDM printers, I think I can get them to turn out pretty good with FDM anyways.
Great work!

That's really impressive. What did you use to draw it? I'm trying to learn to draw 3D in Fusion 360. The learning curve seems hard for an old guy.

cjSawinski the files are linked above. I printed all my tests in FDM and they did look good too. I'd do a layer height of 0.15mm or 0.1mm to capture more detail.

Quickstep192 I drew them in SolidWorks and I spent the beginning of my career doing a whole lot of CAD. Fusion 360 is solid from what I see. Something I want to learn. I actually found the 3D file for the Porsche crest online so I didn't have to make that part. Would have taken a few hours for sure.

Just getting started with this car and I'll share all files on this forum. Just finished 3D scanning the top of the engine so I can design a nice clean heater backdate.

Looks good. Interested if they hold up. What temps will the resin take before deforming?

As far as FDM goes, I've been using ASA and ABS successfully for outdoor projects, I suspect the increased heat from braking would deform either of those filaments.

As an FYI, I first learned solidworks as a mentor for a HS robotics team. Was bummed when I no longer had access to free educational use. I now use Onshape, which is not only free, it can read in solidworks files, and the interface is similar to SW.

Which 3d scanner do you use?
