Seriously though, its all a bit disappointing really, I was looking forward to getting proper closure on this, with the hope that those of us interested' may be a bit further down the line as far as understanding these units a bit more.

Great Thread, thank you for winding it all down to the ECU, never would have thought it would be the direct cause. Karl that was some thorough workmanship, an example to follow especially how you went about eliminating all sorts of potential causes. This was a tough one to crack but you persevered though I bet you had your doubts at times. The member who lent you the ecu, wow, that's a kind soul. Glad systems got it corrected for you, no doubt with the latest and the greatest as a courtesy, you're lucky. Looks like you've got the rest of the summer to save fuel! Better get driving to make up for lost savings:)
