Brake light problems/questions
 

So a friendly motorist rolled his window down and told me that my brakes lights were out (rare to find friendly motorist anymore!)

Anyway, so I check fuses and bulbs (which are fine) and am now trying to figure out how the brake lights are connected/actuated by the brake pedal itself to see if that is the culprit. I've got the pedal area exposed and I can't see any electrical connections or places for some sort of brake actuator light switch.

I'm sure this is an easy one! Can anyone offer help on where to look and how to trouble shoot...... I've checked my Bentley manual and it doesn't cover this particular problem.

Depending on the year of your car it could be the brake switches on the MC (in the front bonnet).

Do a search. This is a very common problem.

I see your car is a '86 cab. There are two switches in the brake master cylinder located in the front trunk.

Both can get clogged over time but can be changed easily plus they are inexpensive VW Bug parts. After changing them you have to purge the brakes.

Both tasks can be done in a couple of hours even by the dumbest mechanic (myself).

I'm not sure if it's necessary to purge the brakes after replacing the switches. I did mine about 18 months ago without bleeding the brakes and had no problems whatsoever afterwords. I did add a little brake fluid, however.

Quick way to test it is to just pull the connector off of one of the switches and jumper it with a paper clip. If the lights come on it is the switch. If they don't come on then keep looking. (or just don't stop!)

BTW the brake lights only work with the key on.
