Replacing Engine/Transmission Mounts
My car is a 1988, 911 Coupe. I wanted to replace all 4 engine/trans. mounts as mine appear to be original equipment. Rubber hardens with age and replacing just seemed to be a good idea. Per our host's website, I ordered 4 mounts as the description read this was the quantity required for my car:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747507155.jpg Come to find out, the G-50 transmission mounts are different - they appear non-removable from the cast-aluminum cross member. So I purchased 2 mounts that I obviously didn't need: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747507392.jpg My questions are as follows: 1) Can the original G-50 rubber mounts be replaced in the existing cross member and if so, how is it done? 2) Does anyone on this forum offer such a service on an exchange basis? |
Not sure about members on this forum, but i believe both WEVO and Elephant Racing offer this service. You can either have them put the mounts in your exact housing, or if you don’t care they can send you a refurbished housing with mounts installled if time is of the essence.

Iirc , wevo system is an aluminium adapter to use earlier style mounts that needs welding , or they could weld your transaxle support if you sent it in . Not sure if they do an exchange basis .
Rebel sell new inserts , I shipped a support to Clint and he installed them for me . I think rennline also sell inserts . |
The front mounts (on the G50 transmission) can be replaced with the Rennline kit. (there may be others?) Jack up the transmission to hold it in place, then remove the two big bolts (to the chassis), and the two studs and two nuts holding that mounting bar to the transmission. Remove the mounting bar. Use a press to get the old mounts out. Put the new mounts in, re-install the bar and bob’s your uncle. It took about an hour to do mine.
The driver's side engine mount is easy but I have not yet tackled the passenger side due to the lack of clearance with the A/C compressor there. I’m not sure if there is potential tension in the shift linkage that should be relieved when changing out the mounts (?) Otherwise it’s pretty straight forwards. |
Thank you gentlemen. I've ordered the Rennline kit and have an arbor press ready to drive out the old mounts and a transmission jack for support. I appreciate the recommendations and for clarifying the procedure.
