Cdi

My 3 pin cdi doesn't wine when contact on and 12v applied.
I also have a permatune installed ,I only don't understand if the permatune works on his own or does need the Bosch cdi.
I have no spark at all.

Bob Ashlock 05-21-2025 09:18 AM

3-pin Bosch needs to whine, so it is dead. P-tune does not whine, different design inside. Both units are independent and interchangeable.

Not always a valid test for a Bosch CDI! How good is your hearing & how close to the CDI was your ear. Did you have the cover off?

jimmyjimmy 05-21-2025 02:47 PM

Well I have no experience, but cover off and I hear nothing.
What's the advantage of the 2 systems being in together .can the permatune work fine on itself?

Yes, until it fails. Get a voltmeter.

The bosch cdi gets warm - not hot- with contact on.
Still some life in it?

No whine = dead CDI ( internal power supply failure )

jimmyjimmy 05-26-2025 09:28 PM

So, not repairable?

AndrewCologne 05-26-2025 11:52 PM

No one can guess what really happened to your CDI. So you should let checked it by a special service and, if necessary, they can repair.

Duc Hunter 05-27-2025 01:53 PM

I see Jonny posted here.....I was going to recommend, if it's dead, to check out Classic Retro's solid-state CDI. I have a few friends running it and they are very happy.

PeteKz 05-28-2025 08:58 AM

If you want an original case CDI, I highly recommend you send it to Bob Ashlock for rebuilding (he replied #2 above). I had a dead 6-pin CDI box a few months ago and he restored it to better than new. Reasonable price for what you get. You can find his website online.

Since you are in France, there are companies in Europe that provide Bosch CDI repairs.
No need to ship your CDI to the USA for repair.

PeteKz 05-28-2025 11:13 AM

Missed that detail--if in Europe, the shipping to USA would be prohibitive.

AndrewCologne 05-28-2025 01:56 PM

@jimmyjimmy
Send the unit to https://www.911-hkz.de
Mr. Gerberding is known for high quality repairs of CDIs/HKZs etc. and is THE address here in germany.
As its EU, shipping to France won't be expensive.

Call him first, ... but wait till 9th of June as he is on vacations.

You can also send your CDI to Station compteurs in France, that's where most people in France send their CDI and meters for repair. Google the name, guy running the business (Claude) is a fellow member on the French forum. Just had my speedometer repaired by him and that's pretty serious business.

jimmyjimmy 05-30-2025 06:55 AM

Ok,thank you all.As I was thinking an MSD isn't that expensive.Perhaps a reparation of the CDI will cost more.I have no idea.

wazzz 05-31-2025 12:12 AM

Give a call to Claude at Station Compteurs on Monday. Phone is 06 09 42 43 49. Or do you want me to ask him how much he would charge to fix a 3-pin CDI? I know he usually goes all over the unit and proactively changes weak or aged components. SCR, caps, etc.
Let me know. ;)

jimmyjimmy 05-31-2025 09:10 AM

That would be great,thank you.
Still searching for the problem of no spark while with the blue permatune I have no spark either.
Also the crane 700 could be faulty..

But the CDI doesn't whine....

PeteKz 05-31-2025 12:27 PM

I had two Permatunes that failed, 30 years ago. You could have two bad units. I would hunt for someone with the same CDI system and buy them a beer or two in exchange for letting you swap their known working unit to see if it works in your car. The coil too.

If it's the 3-pin blue one the Porsche factory used in 1976, they rarely fail.
