Who Do I Call For Windshield Replacement in Phoenix, Arizona
I took the car out for a ride this morning and BAM a rock hit the windshield and cracked it.
I just had the flipping thing replaced in July because the original 1979 glass was still in there and had scratches so bad from the wipers that the glare at night was horrible. The company I used was Glass Tec in Phoenix and it turned into a 2 day ordeal, the guy struggled with the chrome trim, bent it and was not able to get it to stay in. He used an after market chrome strip in the center of the rubber trim, it looked all right but never correct. The original chrome strip is now gone and I do not want to re-install this aftermarket rigged up deal. The top 2 corners were short and popped in the opening of the arc, it was never right. WHAT RUBBER WINDSHIELD WEATER STRIP CAN I USE THAT DOES NOT USE A TRIM PIECE AND IS ALL BLACK? FROM WHAT YEAR? I've read guys installing the weather strip from later model cars and it has worked out. WHO DO I CALL THAT KNOWS HOW TO INSTALL A WINDSHIELD IN A 911 IN PHOENIX? |

I read some posts and think I can use a 964 windshield and 964 trim-less gasket/weather strip. Is this correct? What specific year should I ask for? 1990?

I'm told that in place of the potmetal trim strip you can use the kind of welting that's used to build screen windows, which comes in different sizes and is typically black. But the trim strip is not just decorative: it holds the windshield seal in the correct position, and without it, it may well leak at the corners.
The trim strip can be "bent," after windshield installation, with the proper fabricated tool, typically a well-shaped piece of wood. Did your guy try to install the trim strip after the glass was in place? That's impossible to do. Literally.

Call one of the Porsche garages in town and ask them who they would recommend.

No he did not, the trim was popped into the weather strip then he put the strip on the windshield popped up the rubber, wrapped the rope around it and put it in place in the opening. He went inside the car and as he was pulling the rope the rubber would flatten in the cabin, all was good until he got to the arc at the driver and passenger top corners and every time he did it the chrome trim piece would pop out.
I watched the guy struggle with this for 2 days over and over. On day 3 he came back with a new windshield a new weather-strip and an aftermarket windshield T shaped plastic chrome strip that he glued into the groove that the original strip was meant to go in. It looked good and ended the problem. Today the windshield got hit with a rock and I am not going this route again. The question of the day is: CAN A 1990 964 WINDSHIELD AND GASKET/WEATER-STRIP FIT INTO MY 1979 911SC WITHOUT A HITCH? |

I feel your pain. I have a friend (Here in Tucson) who owns his own window glass business, and has done hundreds of windshields on all types of cars.
he told me flat out, he won't touch European classic car windshields with that chrome strip. He will turn down the business. Lucky for me, he will make an exception for me. My 911 and my 1971 VW Squareback both have it. But I have to help him...and supply the beer. We will be attempting this next week on the 911. Did the business you listed get it done right? Jeff |

My Porsche tech told me to call them and I didn't have a piece of scratch paper handy so I jotted the number into a reply so I would not loose it. They will be putting in a 964 Windshield and Gasket into my 1979 SC.

azrob,
Please post back with your results on the 964 windshield install. Many here have wanted to do the same thing with mixed success. Some fit right in and others have had a devil of a time and still wouldn't fit.

I got talked out of by the window tech so we are going with an OEM Porsche Gasket Seal, OEM Porsche 2 piece chrome trim piece and another '79 SC windshield. The tech told me that the 964 windshield is an inch plus in height difference larger than my windshield and he is concerned how it might react in the event of a collision.
