Alternator Nut remove - Destroyed Pulley
 

Put a new HRT alternator pulley in, shimmed it tight, went for a rip... BOOM!

Pulley shreded, car got hot, but I got home.

How the heck can I get this off without the pulley?

Just ordered the Porsche part, and going to re-shim so it's not as tight.

too low. Can I use the torx inset in the thread?

Yes, if the alternator shaft has a torx or Allen, you can use that to hold the alternator while removing the nut.

I ended up getting it off w a big pair of vice grips. The Torx and smaller allen hole in the shaft were not cutting it.

I replaced with a new Porsche belt pulley and put all 6 washers on the inside, tightened it up and we are back in business.

Good call. I still have the original, this Porsche part is much heavier and thicker than the HT.

I'll be taking the car on quite a few shakedown runs before a trip to Canada in a few weeks. I will have the stock along with a slew of tools, in case this one goes.

Really appreciate you posting this… my old pulley had some wear from the belt and couldn’t really adjust the tension anymore. For something this simple the HT version would be fine and went with it. Solved my tension adjustment issue. It’s been on the car for maybe a couple months with a few hundred miles.

It looks fine at the moment but now I don’t really want to drive the car until I get around to swapping it back out. The P version for $110 seems a bit ridiculous… wonder how the URO version is?

The $110 version is worth not having to worry if the cheaper version does the trick. I took a Porsche one off, but my tool bent the removal hole... I over torqued the original one I put one when the motor was out. That's when I went to the cheaper alternative, which In the long run cost me more stress than had I just bought the Porsche part in the first place.

I say yank that thing off, put the Porsche one in and go on a road trip.
