1979 SC Stereo Speakers Blown/Replace

What are the suggested option for replacing the speakers similar to OEM ones on a 79SC...I dont listen to the radio much, but at least some decent speakers would be good. Thanks All-

Just about any aftermarket 2-way door speaker (only - no rears) will work fine but the problem might be in the install and matching the mounting holes. Don’t recall the size 5 -6”, but be mindful of the depth too. Some good replacements can be had at Crutchfield for $100-$150 pair or even less for JBL, Kicker and Pioneer stuff is reliable for sound, nothing spectacular or over the top performance. They have a “does it fit” assist drop-down.
I was in the same boat, not much into the radio but just enough to add some chatter to the miles.
For what it’s worth I found my aftermarket Pioneers (doors only option) hacked in, loose, knocking about held hanging on two sheet metal screws, broken wire splices, baffle covers missing and no plastic rain sheeting surely had some affect on the speaker itself. So check the condition of your originals they may be salvageable if it matters. If the wires were crossed, it could cause the sound to be affected and seem blown-out.
Once you have the size and depth, hole pattern might be useful but I was able to use fender washers to extend and cover a couple of gaps.
Also worth a note; keeping my original speaker grilles required some JB Weld to repair the broken studs when the prior installer tried to pry them off - which isn’t possible, there are one way retainers on the inside door cards.

5 1/4" fit into the factory rear covers/rain shields, assuming the ones you choose aren't too deep.

6 1/2" fit without the rain covers, best to protect the back side of the speaker with some plastic sheeting extended from the moisture barrier on the inner door panel. plan on a new moisture barrier anyway.

Any ideas for the rear shelf speakers? Finding the correct size (depth included) is not easy. The ones here on Pelican do not fit, despite what the site says. Ugh.

I have one blown original blaupunkt 8 ohm.

Call Crutchfield . . ask for tech support . tell them what car you have and they can guide you to what will fit.

You need undermount rear speakers for the perforated rear deck. The Infinity Kappa 64cfx 4"x6" plate speakers should work. If they are NLA, just get the replacement model after confirming the dimensions against the 64cfx specs (Crutchfield's page lets you do this).

Crutchfeiuld publishes detailed dimensions of the speakers, so you can match the speakers you have now, or find some that will fit in the hole.

Thanks for the great info and Link. I think I will just replace the fronts, which dont even work at this point. The rears are shot but will just disconnect. My head unit on the car when I bought is a Kenwood, at least 15 years old..lol

Front speakers: I wrote about them here + have a set of instructions & photos: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1159035-installing-carbone-rs-door-cards.html#post12214876

Short version:

* get 6.5” and do away with the shallow and restrictive 4.5” plastic bafffles
* foam baffles will keep water off the rear of the speaker
* use washers to help insulate the fasteners and the door to improve sound quality
* I used Infinity Reference 6532ex’s (https://www.crutchfield.com/p_108R6532EM/Infinity-Reference-REF-6532ex.html) - anything with same dimensions will work. You have a bit of room for play with depth-wise when you remove the OE plastic baffles.
* Mine are flush with the door cards (no grilles; just perforated cards), which is also why I chose that model (shallow front depth).
