Shift rod problem

Hello, I just am new to Porsches, my friend gifted me his 1970 Porsche 911t 5sp about a month ago, it wasn’t running so I got the car running and 30 miles in the end of the shift rod weld broke and I had no shifting. Looking around I see the only fix is to pull the engine and transaxle to replace the shift rod, I would think someone would have come up with a fix for this issue, any ideas?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1751296280.jpg

I imgaine the powertrain has to be dropped because there's nowhere else to remove the shift rod from the tunnel than the hole for the shift shaft. But if you can find an adept enough welder I bet you could have it welded in place.

Yes, it can be done. You'll need to remove the trans mount and jack the trans up. The shift rod will come out through the hole. Barely. The shift shaft on the transmission will need to be up and out of the way enough for the tube to clear. Manipulate the shift rod around until it comes out.

I've found that unbolting the handbrake handle from the floor helps when removing the rod with the gearbox in place. It's a tight squeeze!

Congrats on the 911T, that’s an awesome gift! Sucks about the shift rod breaking though. Sadly, the only real fix is to pull the engine and transmission to replace or properly weld it. Some people have tried shortcuts, but they don’t usually last. It’s a bit of work, but worth doing right, and it’s a good chance to check other parts while you're at it. Once fixed, you’ll be good to go for the long haul.

I used this technique to replace the shift rod on my 78SC last fall. A lift would have made things easier but in the end it worked out fine.

Thanks, ChatGPT.
