Question early rearview mirror placement - help?

My car is 90% back together but I forgot to measure the placement of the rearview mirror before the new windshield went in. Obviously it is in the middle but how far down from the top of the windshield should the base be mounted? I am guessing about 8 inches but wondered if someone would not mind checking their's.

Thanks!
Tom

rearview mirror placement - help?

Tom WAIT!!!

8" is way toooo low (excuse the expression )
I'm at work now and 18 miles from my 73' 911... If no one has responded I'll get back to ya after work...

Ballpark, if I remember, is about 3-3 1/2 inches from bottom of rubber seal to top of mirror base block. If you put it much lower it's right in your line of sight... and it WILL make you crazy.

Thanks Chuck!!! I'll wait for your reply before doing anything.

(By the way, it was really cool to see the shots of your car next to Randy Well's at Autofest. Two of my all time favorite cars together.)

Tom,

Good question as previous owner attached mine a little too high. No problem with visibility but.. when I lower the sun visor I found that it would contact the mirror. Obviously mine is not in the correct position.

Tom, in my 73.5 T, original glass with original mirror, the distance between the bottom of the ruber seal and the center of the mirror support is 2 inches.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, that helps a lot. Good suggestion to use the visors for reference.

> early rearview mirror placement - help?

Tom,
Just had a chance to check my car...

My mirror is 2 1/2 inches from the bottom of the rubber seal to the top of the mirror base block, or ... approx. 3 3/8 inches from the bottom of the rubber seal to the center of the base block.

Hope this helps

Chuck, thanks for checking. I used your estimate, jriera's and put the visors in to make sure. I put it 2 1/2" down, just like you said. Worked great, thanks to all.

Tom,

FWIW, I just measured my mirror from rubber seal to top of mirror mount, and it is 3 inches.

It's in a good spot, high but away from the visors. But, after driving the car today for the first time I have found a big distortion in in the passenger side. Looks like I may get to mount the mirror again.

Just a word of caution, I have an 89 anniversary edition Carrera. It has a rearview mirror that is glued on the windshield. By all looks, it’s an original or damn near original windshield. However, when I look out the rearview mirror, I can only see about 50 or 70 feet behind me. When I replaced the glass in my 1975, with the same style rearview mirror, I mounted the rearview mirror in such a position that in my seating position, I could see straight back as you’re supposed to, and when I flipped it to night vision it reflected up off the roof. If you can get the original factory measurements, great, otherwise I would say get it centered, and mounted in the position it needs to be in to see straight back. Unless it’s 100 point show car is worth a couple of hundred thousand dollars… It’s not gonna make any difference in the value of your car.
