Any use sprayable plasti-dip on front lower spoiler?
I just did a thorough cleaning of my 1988 Turbo Look cabriolet, and I can't help but notice that the lower front spoiler, the part closest to the ground (930-503-055-01-OEM)
is looking a bit rough. It has some gouges and imperfections, from 100k miles of use. But its not nearly bad enough to replace, and besides these things are about $1500 at Suncoast, and I wouldn't consider spending that much for what is ultimately a minor , barely noticeable cosmetic imperfection. But I was thinking it could just be sprayed over with plasti-dip, or flex seal, but I don't want to make it worse, or look terrible, then wish I'd never bothered. Has anyone tried this? The one consideration is that there is small Porsche logo right in the middle and I suspect any spray covering would obscure the logo.

Can’t hurt to try and if you don’t like it, peel it off.
I have seen some great plasti dip projects. Have a coworker that did his wheels on a WRX and they look fantastic…I thought it was the factory finish.

Seems like an ideal use for plasti dip… I have done wheels a few times and it holds up very well. On that spoiler it should be even better. Worst case you just have to peel it off.

My 84 has been covered for years, also flag mirrors. You can just touch up as it gets worn. Make sure you do lots of thin coats to build it up.

I Plastidipped my wheels satin charcoal because they were so shiny, and I hate shiny. Now they look terrific. If you think you might ever want to take the Plastidip off the spoiler, I think it’s going to be a challenge, more so than on a hard surface. But, as John S says above, you give yourself the best results and best odds of relatively painless removal if you do numerous thin coats. I doubt you’ll need to do more than touch it up occasionally, though.

The rubber lip? When I resprayed my car I used a rubber conditioner on all the exterior color and it made a huge difference. My rubber lip had a number of gouges as well, and smoothing the color out made the defects much less noticeable.
What was the rubber conditioner? I have no idea, totally forgot. You're welcome! It was probably something as simple as Meguiar's back to black.

Black plasti dip fades from decent black to a brownish shade.
And this was on a garaged car If it matters to you.

Well - i am starting to have 2nd thoughts. I bought the black plasti-dip, and practiced on some different surfaces. It goes on great, and looks wonderful. It has the advantage of a nice rubbery matte finish that seems to be ideal for that lower spoiler.
BUT - getting it off, while certainly doable, was harder than I expected, even on my small samples. I was imagining trying to remove it all from the entire spoiler and that seems like it would be an arduous task, especially given the surface is not bare metal. Plus, the concern about it fading to brown, makes me think I may just be creating an ongoing maintenance issue, rather than solving a cosmetic issue. If I spray in on, and it looks great, then I just do nothing, the comments here suggest it will fade, and peel and need ongoing attention. So then I am always having to keep covering it? Or do you always remove the previous coating?

I have had a set of wheels on my off roading Jeep plasti dipped black for over a decade and they haven’t faded to brown. Have had to touch them up a few times as they get torn up sometimes from when they are buried in mud/dirt and spinning. It’s a lot rougher than anything the front spoiler would see unless you are regularly running into curbs with it.
Now having said that I imagine it would be a lot tougher to get off the spoiler than off a metal surface so I agree that could be a real pain if you decide you don’t like it. It sometimes will peel on my wheels because it gets torn and the friction will tend to pull it off, but again that’s not what your spoiler will experience. When I respray parts of my wheels I just rip off any loose hanging bits and hit the whole thing, you can put as many layers as you want on. Having said that having a thick coating of multiple layers makes it a bit easier to peel off… at least on slick metal surfaces. |

I coated the rubber lip of the whale tail 6 years ago. No issues experienced, no fading, looks perfect. I did that to cover a repair done to the rubber.

With a few of you saying that you didn't have fading, and since this is really not the most obvious or visible area, I went ahead and did it. Looks amazing, has a nice natural look. Its just a tiny bit shinier than the old parts, and in the event that it ever does fade, it was so easy and cheap , I could just give it another coat or two. Thanks for the all the input, I am happy with the result. I even masked the tiny Porsche logo in the center.

Part of me would want to go with flat but since it is a part that’s mostly out of sight the glossy seems like it would be a lot more convenient to hose off dead bugs and road crud. |

I used the regular , not the glossy. I think it just looks shinier and cleaner since the existing surface was pretty rough from 100k miles.

I used plasti dip on my two back bumpers years ago and they still look great!! I had some gouges that I filled in then the plasti dip. Amazing!!
