Lower valve covers oil drain question
I have always removed the covers with the sump and tank drained. Is it possible to just drain the the sump and then pull the covers ?
I want to inspect for rock shaft leaks.

I think you can, but it may very slowly seep through the pump.

@Ron
Just jack up the car on the side where you want to remove the valve cover high enough so that the oil flows completely to the other side of the engine. Then you can remove the cover, and almost no oil will drip out.

I've done it in the past to redo valve adjustment after I had f* up first adjustment. It's doable even without jacking the car on one side. Just drain the sump, you'll collect about 4 liters that you can put back after you are done.

Start the motor to pump oil to the tank clearing the sump
Jack up so you can get valve cover off and check things. Should not lose any quantity oil. Draining the sump then pouring the drained oil back into the motor can induce dirt into the system. Bruce |
