test pipes
I have 87 911(stock) and want more oomph. can anyone give me some feedback on whether or not I should install a cat bypass test pipe. emmissions not an issue in my area. Is their noticeable power improvement and/or any drawbacks?? thanks

I installed one several years ago for two reasons. One is its hot here in Houston and removing the cat I feel lowered the heat on that side of the engine. Two is its cheap and I was curious. I'm not sure it added anything other than a deeper exhaust tone which I like. My 1987 has a mass flow sensor so maybe the bypass helped but I couldn't tell. One draw back is Houston raised the emission test hurdle and I cannot pass it without the cat so it goes back on once a year. Previously I could pass easily without it. A testament to the efficiency of the engine especially since it has well over 130,000 miles on it.

I have heard the premuffler adds horsepower and the bypass doesn't. I dont have any proof one way or the other. I just hollowed out the cat. It sounds better but cant feel any power increase. No emmisions worries here either.

I have an 82 SC. I do not know if the test pipe gave any increase in HP but it seems to have a little better throttle response. That could be in my head, but who cares. I believe. It sounds good and runs a little cooler, which is important here in South Carolina, where it gets real hot.

Been there done that. Dont waste your money on a test pipe, it only lowers the temperature around the left valve cover.
I now have the Fabspeed pre-muffler, it gives you a lot better torque at a low RMP.
