The Quarter Horse and The Mule

When I was young I grew up on a small farm and was taught that a quarter horse was a great, all-around horse who could do it all. I also learned that mules were incredibly sure-footed, beasts of burden that you could rely upon to perform the heavy lifting.

Just over four years ago I bought a 1972 911T, a project that had been partially finished, but ran albeit without gauges and had primer white RSR body panels screwed on to hold them in place. She had some high quality components - 996T brakes, 930 LSD, full cage, but was powered by a SBC to the tune of around 400hp. Over time she has become slightly more presentable and I've learned an incredible amount over that period. Enter, The Mule.

However, I always felt like I was missing the true 911 experience and would find myself browsing for another to add to the stable. Yesterday, after narrowly missing out on a 1974 a couple weeks ago, I brought home a 1981 911SC to form the basis of my do-it-all entertainment vehicle - The Quarter Horse.

The big reason I wanted another was to be able to share the experience with my entire family - My wife, my five year old daughter who absolutely adores cars, and my son who is suppose to show up next month. In short, I needed back seats which the '72 lacks.

Over the next few months and likely years, I'll attempt to update this thread with changes to both of my continuously on going projects.

Hope you all enjoy! I'll attempt to upload a few pictures from my phone momentarily.

Saadi, happy to see I’m not alone in my troubles.

This is the car that I’m going to somewhat strive for with the SC. I hear Getty makes solid CF bumpers. RS door cards, carpet kit, and black wheels are a forgone conclusion - Unsure if I’ll paint or sell the Fuchs. I have a smooth decklid that should fit.

Other than that I’m planning on removing the “Carrera” script, replacing it with flat black “Porsche” script, and was considering the Numeric shifter. However, after hearing about the 996 transaxle swap, I’m going to hold off because that sounds ideal.

First purchase complete. Rear three points. Wife isn’t comfortable with the two point options so should be an interesting project.

Until then, my daughter gets to ride up front in a booster!

So I attempted to install a decklid from an SC that I purchased from a member here and just assumed it would fit. I have some significant clearance issues with the AC condenser. I’m assuming I don’t have to have the tea tray to have functioning AC, right? Am I missing something obvious?

And what is this component?

The thing in your hand is the rear deck light, IIRC you turn the metal insert from a tab to expose the light which turns it on.

Thanks Ian. I'll probably save a few ounces and just leave that guy off in that case.

Decklid needs more time aligning it properly for gaps but I managed to get it to fit after disassembling the condenser and giving her a bit of convincing.

I took my wife and daughter to RSF Cars and Coffee Saturday and we had a blast. I think I’ve put about 500 miles on the SC since I picked her up a few weeks ago.

I also managed to really refine the shift linkage in the 72 adhering to the Bentley manual so there is literally no slop in the 930 transmission - It almost feels gated. It’s night and day from the “lazy” 915 but I really enjoy the experience of both and realized the former owner wasn’t really use to the 915 when he said he had occasional issues getting into first and second. That, and the addition on the omega spring has made driving 72 a much more enjoyable experience. Can’t believe I have driven the car for four years without it.

Stopped by the local PCA Cars & Conversations this morning. My first PCA event and really enjoyed the people.

After, I dug into a project I thought would be pretty quick - Changing the brake pads which were certainly due for replacement as you can see.

Unfortunately I also realized two things about this "quick job." One - The calipers are in pretty poor condition, the rubber boots were essentially non-existent. Two - The outer driver side piston is seized.

There was also noticeably less brake pad left on that seized piston which makes sense. After assessing the problem I attempted to get a C clamp on it to depress the piston but it wouldn't budge and I was running out of time prior to dinner with the wife and daughter so I had to button her back up and get everything back into the garage.

So now I have a decision to make - Either rebuild both front calipers, replace them with PMB Restored ones that are offered by our host at $350, or upgrade them to something with better braking performance.

I'm leaning towards the latter two options as my time spent in the garage is limited by other commitments but I'm thinking the stock six and seven inch Fuchs might not allow many alternatives for better brake performance.

Any thoughts?

I went ahead and just ordered replacements from PMB for all four corners figuring that if both the fronts were bad, there is little likelihood that the rears are functioning properly.

Plus they were 20% off - So hard to argue with completely refurbished calipers for $120 per corner.

My wife is starting to question all the Pelican boxes that have been showing up recently...

Received another few items in the mail today! It’s like Christmas when I get home from work.

Threw in the pop-off air box valve in there as well so I have all the parts to complete a few projects.

1) New calipers and brake pads.
2) Heat back-date.
3) Pop-Off valve.

Hoping to at least get started on the caliper replacements on the fronts this afternoon, but definitely need to finish them this weekend prior to getting the Fuchs painted Monday. The brake fluid didn’t appear very dark but I didn’t see any documentation of it being replaced by the previous owner - Should I go ahead and just knock that out as well?

yup!

... the brake fluid is definitely a while you're in there endeavor

This is a must have when bleeding brakes solo.

Copy. Fortunately I purchased a vacuum brake bleeder when I changed my Ducati's brake fluid last year so I should be good!

Don’t you love it when your neighbor’s get to partake in your project car’s parts deliveries?

My neighbor sent me this video yesterday from Wednesday’s delivery.

Finished up all four corners this morning. In the process of removing the retaining clip on the driver's rear one of those pins popped out and spent about 45 minutes looking for it (Make sure you want a dark floor before you get your garage done) and ended up having to improvise.

And of course after flushing finishing the job and getting the car back on the ground what did I immediately find...

Now I've got to package up the old calipers and send them back. Glad I kept the boxes because I got an email from Pelican yesterday, five days after delivery that if they weren't returned in the original boxes they wouldn't be accepted.
