Winter is on the way, SC Oil Question

The cold weather is coming up, what is the best oil to use in the winter time? I am planning on changing the oil this weeked when I replace the front wheel bearings, brake pads, and rotors. It looks like I am going to go with 20W50, is this a good choice? Has anyone ever had any troubles running 20W50 for a 911SC in the winter? I've heard to stay away from synthetics, Are any brands preferred over others for a SC, Mobil One Vs. Pennzoil VS. Castrol? I appreciate the feedback

You are running you're car in the winter?

It depends on the winter, but 2050 is too thick depending on the temps. 10W30 should be fine, but again it depends on what you consider winter.

Our winter temps can get down to freezing, usually it is pretty cold (avg. temp 20's- 30's) after November. A friend of mine recommends using 10W30 as well, others I know who own SC's advise me to use 20W50.

According to the owners manual for my '78, for year round use:

"... use multi-grade oils SAE 10 W-50, 15 W-50 or 20 W-50. The 20 W-50 oil should not be used at constant temperatures below +5 degrees F/-15 degrees C."

From this it would appear 20W50 would be fine for winter (in your area), you might look at using a 10W40 or 15W40 however, both should be readily available in any name brand (BTW, I won't use Pennzoil even in my lawnmower). It would also appear that 10W30 is much too thin (except, perhaps, in the most extreme cold, e.g. consistantly below zero F.).

I like the Mobil 1 0W-40. It's great for cold starts.

Thanks Everyone, I changed my oil today with castrol 20W50 today. The SC runs much smoother than before.
