backdated dash question
 

I want to backdate my dash much like the picture here. Is the aluminum extrusion simply attached over the original dash or do you remove the original and then attach the extrusion. In the picture it appears to be over the original since the top part where the gas cap release is looks to be an original piece.

That knee pad is removed, has 4 nuts on studs that are tricky to reach that attach to underside of metal dash frame.
The all metal kneepad then takes it place using same mounting holes. Two pc. OEM kneepad fits either side of ashtray whereas the all metal alum one is one piece.
The gas door pull does not interfere or moved out of the way with either original or aftermarket. I believe the ashtray is eliminated at least the one I recall I was going to use.

there is a black foam like piece where the extrusion goes. Do you remove that too or just put it on top?

Removing kneepad is the pink part in your pic, or what I outlined. Essentially kneepad removes downward and is separate from all other components…

Edit : Thinking about yours, if it’s the “basket weave” section in your pic you refer to (?) and depending on the aftermarket kit you’ll be using, then that basket weave trim piece which is an overlay trim on early 911’s is removable but without it there will be holes, adhesive, maybe raw scratches on the frame that the trim hides.
Or in the case in which a retrofit kit with a new design of the +74 models comes as a complete set with some assembly order.
When I debated on this backdate, the glovebox and radio were required to be removed and I didn’t do the project.

I pulled the plastic off my 1975, and paid the extrusion down over the bare metal. Same on the glove box. My glove box does not fit as flush as I would like, and many of the early cars I have seen their glove box is not flush with the dash.....nor are many of the mid year cars I have seen.

I did think about knee pads with A/C vents in them when I re-did my dash, as I know I would be going A/C. With my Classic Retrofit system and my vent replacing the fuel/oil-level gauge I am thinking about eliminating those little vents not eh edge of the dash. On my car they often close themselves, and I don't notice there is a big difference in cooling. Might be a thought. I also don't have a radio am may put a second vent int eh radio delete panel instead of those 2 small ones at the edge of the dash.

Chris , did you leave he piece on the upper left that the gas door release knob fits in and the piece on the right side of the dash that the lighter and fog light knobs are? Nice gauges by the way, they look great.

May not be the direction you want to head, but this is the Rennline backdate kit that eliminates the glovebox and ashtray. And in my case, no radio either. (iPhone plugs into hidden amp...)

Their kit has the aluminum formed panel that eliminates all the foam pieces of the G body car. You can see how it fits around the gas lid pull.

It was a bit costly, but i've been pleased with the results. (Red basketweave came from Sonderwerks in CLT area)

I did not. I removed everything. I then painted the dash with black wrinkle finish. I love the look in my bothers E-Type Jaguar, and copied that. Works great.

Thanks on the dash. The green gauges are the current. John Bell here on Pelican did an amazing job on them for me!

Patrick, I have considered that and like it, very clean look. I plan to be at Luft by the way. I have not heard if my car was accepted yet, probably will not be. I will probably have Sonderwerks do my seats and interior leather work.

Luft put out a statement that submissions ended this past Sunday (8/17), and they will start making selections. Hopefully, some fun cars from the Carolinas will be there. Luft7 did have "air-cooled" parking only that was nice for attendees and fans to check out. Doesn't seem to be the case with this event, unfortunately. Sonderwerks did my sq weave carpet as well. Good folks.

On the car in your photo, the basket weave inlay was applied on top of the existing dash trim pieces.

that is what it looks like to me also. It looks good to me and a lot less work than removing the existing pieces. Lots of good looking options out there, as the guys above have shown.

My foam pad had warped in one spot, and I wanted the metal channel slightly recessed, so I removed the pad and built up the area beneath slightly so the HVAC controls fit. I did clean up the area by the fuel release knob and painted it. I'm really happy with how mine turned out:

As others have mentioned, the Rennline dash backdate kit is a great way to go. You can have your trimmer cover the main part in leather, then make an insert for the center out of whatever material you like. You have to remove all the existing dash kneepads and foam padding, so down to the metal. The backdate dash cover then screws into the metal dash. You lose your glovebox doing this but the look is worth it IMO. Any holes for extra stuff like dash switches need to be drilled. There are knockouts for the radio and climate control.

I agree, that is a good way to go. I go back and forth on losing my glove compartment. I do find it useful, but they never seem to fit well

Lol -- i found an attractive & portable solution to my now-cancelled glovebox. The Herschell nylon lunchbox. :) Perfect size to hold paperwork and original owner's manual.
