VW/Porsche Playhouse Progress

Started framing! Ordered the trusses today - they were supposed to be started a couple weeks ago, but the truss builder got 'confused'. In the mean time we'll finish framing, do the plumbing, electrical, etc. I also have to have the phone company come out and re-hang my phone line - it goes right thru the structure - yes, lliterally through the structure!

Lookin' good! I see you've cornered the market on milk crates, Thom. I bet the local dairy has a hitman out looking for you!

Thom,

Starting to look like something, are you stick framing it or western framing on the ground? I didn't see any headers for windows, doors and garage door header (heavy one). They carry the roof load in overspans of the framing. It's much easier installing on the ground and then standing the wall up with a couple of buds. You can still do the headers with the walls up it just alot harder holding in place a 4x8,4x10,4x12 when nailing. Plumb, line and brace walls before trusses come........

I'm just jealous, I wish I had a playhouse just for my P-car and other toys & tools. Keep us posted on your progress or have any construction ?'s

Rick

I noticed the same thing about the headers. I see the door opening on the right and what looks like spacing between the studs in the back for possible a window.

Looks like he's got the king studs in place, but not the jack studs, which will support the headers. I hope those are spaced at least 3" further apart than the windows are wide

You're looking at the garage from the front; look closely and you can see the cutout in the slab for the door. The man-door is round the corner on the right side. The electrical panel will go on the short wall between the man door and the big door.

The framer guy didn't put in the full schedule of studs yet so that it would be easier to get the walls up with just 2 people. The header for the bathroom window (the only window in the structure) will go on with it's wall, and the Big Header will go on with the trusses when we have the crane. We're also going to put in a header for a wall-mount A/C unit, which was an afterthought and isn't on the plans, so we'll wait until we get the framing signed off.

I haven't worked out the electrical schedule yet, still shopping around for light fixtures. In my current garage, which is 25x20x9, I have 7 4-tube, 4' flourescent fixtures in a T-bar ceiling, and that's almost enough light . I will probably do 8 or 10 similar fixtures in the new garage, but split the circuits in each fixture so I can bring up half of the lights separately.

The most shocking feature for everyone who's seen the structure in person is how tall it is! The walls are 10', but once you add in the stem wall and sill plates, the back wall of the shop is 10' 9", the side wall, at the front, is 10' 11"!

I should have updated pictures tonight.
