steam cleaning

The closer I get to painting my project the more I start thinking of other areas of the car. I was reading the archives and came across a mention of using a steam cleaning system to degrease the drivetrain and remove all the built up crud from the undercoating.

Has anyone tried one of the infomercial type steam cleaners? I am refering to the "steam buggy" type things. They can be found on ebay for about $30 and that's cheaper than having the car detailed.

Come on fess up. Who has one of these? What were the results? I don't care how well they clean the toilet I just want to clean my engine that has been instorage for the past year or so. I would think its easier than solvents and such.

I'm not sure about "infomercial" grade steam cleaners. However, a friend who runs a Bimmer repair shop just did some work on my 318 (power steering pump), and steam cleaned everything before even turning one wrench. I'm not sure on the method or unit used (can easily find out), but I was amazed at how clean everything was! It looked like a brand new car, right off the assembly line under there.

Exactly! Steam cleaning is a great way to get rid of all sorts of grime.

I may just have to get one and see how they work. I assume the home version is slow but should work just as well.

If you get some details on the shops system that would be great.

It would help a great deal, if you have a Heated High Presure unit.Steam cleaners, that either run off of keroseen(sp), or gas are the best.

Just called my buddy, and he said that his unit is a wall-mounted industrial steam cleaner with a Bosch heater. (??) Basically, he steam cleans the area, then coats it with an Amsoil product called "Power Foam", then hits it one last time to rinse. Amazing results. I am very skeptical about the "as seen on TV" versions, but definitely post your findings if you take the plunge and buy one!
