New Shifting Noise
 

Hi all, I replaced my stock 915 shifter with one that was fitted with a factory short shift kit, as well as my coupler with the Stomski coupler. It seemed fine on day 1, but since I'm getting these whines and vibration like noises that I can feel through the shifter as I shift into gear. Videos for noise reference. Is this just the coupler transmitting more NVH into the shifter or what could be the issue? Did not have anything like this before making the swap.

I don’t know what the problem is, but that’s definitely not normal

I’d look at how you aligned the coupler. I wouldn’t drive it until you short that out.

Not sure if the noise in the first video is coming from the shifter itself or further back in the car. But the second video certainly sounds like it’s coming from the transmission, as if it’s trying to disengage or engage with 2 gears at the same time.

I just swapped out the coupler with the factory one, I'm getting the same noises so it's probably something to do with the shifter itself or way I installed it (which seemed pretty straightforward!)

I started getting the exact same noise last week! Sounds just the same as your video. Only happens when shifting into 2nd and 4th. If I’m gentle with 2nd, it doesn’t happen, but is pretty consistent with 4th.

I replaced all shifter/linkage/coupler bushings two years ago and everything has worked well since, so I don’t suspect anything has worn. I’m going to adjust the linkage and see if maybe it’s just come out of alignment, though everything still shifts fine otherwise.

Through searching I’ve seen others recommend checking the selector fork. Probably heading to that if adjusting the linkage doesn’t help. Very curious to see what other suggestions come from this thread!

Did you realign the coupler when you swapped it back?

I did realign the old coupler when I put it back, but still getting the same noise.

Any advice for fine tuning the coupler? Just not sure if I should be tuning it length-wise or rotationally

what coupler do you have in now.It is definitively not adjusted correctly ..use the original coupler and here is a video how to do it right..report after

And as Ant said. If the noise appeared after fitting the coupler then the conclusion might be that it’s the source. I fitted a Stomski a few years ago and immediately noted the amount of 'noise' it brought into the cabin. I removed it a couple of years ago and it’s noticeably quieter at certain speeds.

Update: I readjusted the factory coupler and still getting the noises. No issues shifting into each gear, however the noise is present when shifting into gear, with clutch in and moving. I can feel it driving with the clutch in and hand on the shifter. No noises moving through the gears while in the garage with clutch in.

What do your shift rod bushings look like?

I think the shift rod bushing looks OK, was replaced 2 years ago. I swapped out the short shifter for the old shifter, still same noise. Possible the Stomski coupler's precision damaged something in the transmission where it was used to a bit more slop? I have the complete old set up on the car now (factory shifter and coupler), and am getting the noise while shifting in to gear under load. No issues once in gear.

That’s different to the noise I had then, mine was whilst in gear

If the noise heard in the video's is still there even after re-fitting the old set up, and making sure its adjusted correctly,[very important] then I fear you may have damaged something inside the gearbox, there are some very knowledgably guys here, who know these gearboxes inside out, hopefully you can find info through doing a search, or maybe someone who has read this thread can point you in the right direction.

Here's an idea, I had a hard time getting the shifter knob back on to the shifter and was banging on it with a rubber mallet, could that have damaged something down the line in the transmission?

I very much doubt it, the shaft is pretty robust, but I guess anything's worth considering at this stage, remove the shifter, and check the rod for any obvious signs of damage, take some clear picks and post them up here.
Just a thought; after re-visiting the vids you posted, I am wondering if its the gear rod vibrating against something in the tunnel, check this too.

Well, shifting is when the linkage does its work ... it's "floating" otherwise.

I would remove the shifter and inspect the mechanism in case the additional NVH from the non-OEM coupler has worn something out. Perhaps its just a busted 2 year old bushing which would say to me the non-OEM coupler and the original shifter don't play well together.
