Be careful where you buy your Swepco 201

Purchased a gallon of 201 from ebay... Took 2 weeks to arrive

This is what I received... I'm ok with using 210 in my 86 915 but 1, it's not what I ordered and 2, look at the stamp on the bottle.

I'll be requesting a refund. And ordering from a known supplier.

201 is blue, 210 is red, I wonder if the viscosity label is just wrong.

If it's a known supplier and you're reasonably confident that's who you actually got it from, maybe call them and see what's up. There is lots of counterfeit stuff on ebay. If it's an expensive-ish item (I think Swepco qualifies), there is incentive to sell a fake version.

How does it pour?

Definitely questionable and weird.

I get mine from our sponsor or (more often than not) Jason @ Paragon.

Very curious to see what’s inside that bottle of “5W30” :-)

Yeah, what’s inside.

It doesn’t hurt and probably beneficial to call SWEPCO too, they probably would like to know a bit more if there’s counterfeit product circulating out there. The labeling and lot data looks odd. So they could decipher the printing and authenticity.

https://swepcolube.com/contact/

Counterfeit oils and lubes are as common as watches and fashion wear.

The overseas scammers go to great lengths to replicate genuine products albeit with inferior components only to fail with translation and chintzy labeling products even the adhesives to put those label on or missing shipping safety seals. Easy for this gets overlooked by the consumer.
Lucky for you that you noticed it.

Here on Pelican 210 is $20 more than 201. Would an ebay vendor intentionally ship out 210 instead of 201?

Probably a mistake from poorly trained recently hired staff

Do you know what it takes today to find good help to run a business?

Specialty car requires specialty shops and suppliers. That's my philosophy

Response from Swepco -

Hello Sir,

I have confirmed that we had a few gallons that left the building that we labelled with the SAE 5w30 on the bottle in error. I confirmed the material in the bottles were the SWEPCO 210 and you can confirm by color because the 210 product is red in color. You should probably check before you put it in use.

Hope this helps,

FYI - I used a flashlight to shine though the white container and it does look red... I haven't broken the seal yet as I will try to return it.

I’d just use it then. It’s a great oil. It’s only downside is it’s winter viscosity.

Well that was mighty cordial of them.

Big difference than what the earlier response they gave you…”check the contents before using…we have some on the shelf mislabeled”.

Simple as an end of run jug filling transition from motor oil to gear lubricant, quality control forgot to proofread the first fill off the conveyor.

Thinking about human error and FTC labeling errors that affect these products, there should be some formal memo issued or recall to distributors. Your keen observation and inquiry got that rolling.

The what-if…that it were a 5W-30 engine oil unsuspectedly going into a gear box.
Bigger problem for many.
