My new 964!!! ... Oil Question

I'm back... it's been a year, but I'm back in a Porsche... I just bought a 1992 911 C2. Gaurds Red with 60,000mi and factory in excellent condition. It is awesome! I'm concerned about one thing that the oil reservoir gauge is doing though. The car has a rear seal leak, it's very slow so I'm not going to tear the engine apart just to fix it, and it just makes me a little nervous about what happened today.

The owner's manual says the when the reservoir gauge should be horizontal when the car is level and at normal operating temperature and that the gauge will vary while driving and isn't too great of a concern. Also as the revs increase the level will obviously decrease. However, after starting the engine, the level slowly creeps up to full. while cruising (60-80 mph) it is usually horizontal, but sometimes drops into the redzone... even though it should vary while driving, should it go into the red ever? Also, when idling it always stays vertical or nearly vertical. Is this normal? bad? or doesn't it mean anything.

The car's oil pressure follows what the owner's manual says it should do so I'm not too worried, it's obviously getting oil and not even coming close to overheating, the reservoir gauge just concerned me.

If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Andrew

Your oil level guage only works when the car is level and idling at running temp. Do not pay any attention to the guage while you are driving. Sounds like you may have a little too much oil in the system. Try the dipstick. It can be difficult to read. Still IMHO the most reliable method of checking the oil. Don't worry, you have plenty of oil. I like it about midway on the dipstick, and midway on the oil level guage. You'll get used to it.

Wink

Thanks, I talked to my mechanic Monday morning and he said the same thing.

I thought I'd add a pic of my new car for everyone to see... I'm pretty pleased with it, especially all of the options it has, it has all of the cup car options, the wheels, 4 piston brake calipers, mirrors, and exhaust.
And man does it drive nicely!

Well, I dropped a little more into it than I wanted to, I'd been looking for an 83SC or 84-86 carrera and this just happened to come along. I paid 24k for it, which is not bad at all. One of the main reasons I got it cheaply is the oil leak that I mentioned, but it's a really slow leak, and I'm not going to worry about it until I have the engine out of the car and apart for something else. Plus, while I love the classic lines of the older cars it is nice to have a car you don't worry about constantly and has a lot of newer safety features. It's a huge jump from my '67 912.

Lol, and yes, those 17 inch cup wheels are nice... they have Pirelli P-zeros on them right now which are great, but I'll probably switch to a more durable tire when they have to be replaced.

I think that was a really good buy for those miles. The C4s and cabs with higher miles are a little less but to me the C2 is worth much more. If it doesnt have the cylinder head leaks its worth more too. I wouldnt fix that leak either. Just drive it. Heck may even cure itself, obviously has not been driven much. I am jealous. When I finish my RS look 73 I am selling and loooking for a 964 c2. Cant wait. Considered a duck tail on it?
