3.6 conversion intake connection
 

For a 3.6 (964) conversion in a ‘80 911, where does this hose connect to?
Do you just add a breather filter?

Examples would be appreciated.

I would guess that most of people on here have 993 3.6 swaps which dont have that part. PET shows a breather hose that goes from there into the top of the oil tank so unless you swapped oil tanks also, i would either plug it or put a 993 boot on there.

I have a variorum intake sitting on a shelf and it has it as well (boot is different). You’re correct, I think it does go to the oil tank. I’m using a SC oil tank and can feed it into that…before I chase the hose done I was hoping for confirmation and what’s been successful for others. I tried plugin it and the engine ran horrible.

I didn't even think about the varioram intake. I was referring to the 1995 3.6 but I just looked it up and it does have that port also but its on the other side. Interesting that it is downstream of the mass air flow sensor but still above the throttle plate. This tells me that its simply pulling in vapors from the oil tank but it must be a closed loop system. Does your engine stumble or smooth out when you open the oil filler cap with it running?

Considering this is after the AFM, theoretically, the air going through it is not metered by the AFM - could this effect the way engine runs?

That fitting connects to the breather on the oil tank. If you put a filter on the intake hose, you'll also need one on the oil tank. I wouldn't recommend doing that though, the filter on the oil tank will take on oil vapor and drip down the frame rail and make a mess. Easier to just run the OEM hose or get a length of hose cut to fit.

I've run it with a filter on the tank when I had ITBs and with the OEM hose with two 3.6 swaps. Running the hose is a better solution.

Yes, it is possible to ingest moisture and oil vapors. A catch can can be used to avoid this.

Any pictures of how catch can was installed?

Yes, only if you overfill your oil tank but it's how the original system was designed so it's not any worse than what a completely original setup would do.

I've always considered the oil tank to be it's own giant catch can. You can certainly add an additional one but I haven't found it necessary.

I don't have a photo unfortunately. I mounted a small catch can to the forward oil tank attach bolt that comes through the tub in the trunk. I ran hose from the oil tank to the catch can, then from the catch can to the intake boot connection. Hope this helps.

Agree with Gabe. I collect small amounts of moisture in mine, but feel necessity is going to be driven by condition of motor and how long/hard it is driven.
