I know I just got it, about 3 months ago, but in the last month my wife and I signed on the line for a house, and of course kids are the next step. Therefore I am seriously considering moving to something with a little more room. It's stressful b/c I wanted my 911 for so long, but now have to think of more important things. It's 1982 911SC, black on black, 108000 miles, rebuilt engine about 20,000 miles ago, new clutch cable, new a/c blower and recharge, and major service with valve adjustment in the last three months. It has a rotory A/C compressor, sport seats, sport suspension, and factory front and rear spoilers. What do ya think about asking price in this market? I looked at the 911SCs for sale on ebay, most not even getting $10,000. This is very disheartening, considering I paid well over 10 for mine. Thanks for your thoughts.
You check out pictures here: First 911, picked her up last week!! |

It depends on what your priorities are and the details of your finances. If the car is paid for, that is one thing, but if you're making payments, that is another. Is it your only car? Does driving it make you happy?
There are many more important things in life than a 911. BUT, taking care of one's self and finding some joy in life is important too. If the car brings you more joy than stress and you can afford it, then don't sell. If it causes you more grief worrying about "what if?", then it isn't worth having in the garage. |

I was in the same boat a few weeks back. I have an '82SC that filled a life-long dream of owning a Porsche. The car is much like yours except metallic black, and no spoiler but had rebuilt motor, Recaro SRDs, new shocks etc. But with up coming life changes I was in the process of selling it less than a year after I purchased it. But the market is very weak right now so the wife and I chatted and decided to keep it for now and re-evaluate things later. FWIW, I was hoping to get $11000 for mine with some lookers but no offers.

LOL! I'll give you 9K for 82SC but I'll need some documentation first. PHD or MD preferable but I'll take an MA as assurance of his quality

RC76,
Don't jump the gun, wait a little while and see how things pan out. If you leave the car alone and just do the annual maintenance, drive it and enjoy it, it will not let you down. Even with our car built up to street/race specs it is still more reliable and more durable than any other vehicle I have ever owned (I have owned 25 cars in my short life). If you need to sell it in order to go forward then do it and plan for the future to pick up another one later. There are plenty around so if that is the case then it’s not that big of a choice.

It sounds like the kid(s) are at least 9 months out. Plus the rear seats are perfect size for little ones. Search the boards here for baby seat options. Adding this all up and I guess you have at least 7 years of good times with the SC ahead. So unless the sell is purely for financial recovery, keep the car. Go ahead and live a little...it's ok, really. You can get one of those baby sun shades for the rear window or something.
Speaking from experience there will never be the "right" time for a dream to come true. You need to make it happen. Once the kids are in the picture your play money will evaporate as quick as your play time. This is will be a good thing, trust me. In the end that $10K+ is not going to make or break you so keep that in mind too. Last edited by dmoolenaar; 07-10-2003 at 11:16 AM.. |

Your timing is not good. The economy seems to be turning. If you can, I would hold out just a little while. The values are hopefully at their bottom and will be tuning upward. The best part is you can enjoy it on the man time.

I don't want to be around when they run the leakdown on you... RC: I have to agree with Nostatic - if you have paid the car off you are going to lose your shirt. If it is bleeding money for the two of you then that is another matter. Remember, there are rear seat belts for your SC and a child seat that will fit. I use my SC to move three soccer kids around. A rack can be put on a coupe to handle bicycles and kayaks. You would be amazed what you can do with what appears to be a little car. Best of luck, John

Same goes for the San Diego housing market. Sold our home 2 months ago - if we waited till now we could have made another $20K...easy. Can't beat myself up too much - still made a good profit. How does that go "shoulda, woulda, coulda, if'n, id'a".

If you dont really need the dough....keep it....you'll need something to blow off steam when you are a new dad....and you'll miss your baby as soon as she is sold imo.....

Thanks for the supportive comments, like you all said, the market is ridiculous right now. I have enough trouble thinking about selling, much more if I had to sell at a large loss three months after purchase. I'll keep thinking and driving for now, I just wanted to see what others in my position might be thinking. Thanks, you really picked up my spirits.

Don't sell it now. If you have to sell it wait for the market prices to come back. It's a nice looking car and if you had a good engine rebuild you'll have it for many more years. Ask yourself what it will cost to replace it when the time comes versus keeping it.

I don't think it's that bad out there. However, I wouldn't base the value of your car on eBay. I just sold my '81 Targa last week for $12.5. I would also keep it and use it for a family car. I bought the '81 around the same time when my son was born...great family car! Well, except his mother usually stayed home when we took the P out!

TIM I am 2 years away from my MD...I'll call you then
Noah how's it going out there? did the 964 cams...that ride in your car inspired me...hahaha...keep an eye out for the targa project...just waiting for funds funds funds... your car is looking good As a student I don't really know what it is like out there ecomnomically...but I say keep your options open...put the car out there on the market if you need to, but don't sell unless you get a good deal...even though the market is soft there are still some motivated buyers posting an add here or at rennlist is free, and all you need it some snap shots and a nice description...plus if a buyer does not come along...take it was a sign from God to stay in the SCWDP and enjoy your car...family first that is Michael Corleone's philosophy...when in doubt, turn to the Godfather for advice, it has all the answers to lifes questions MJ Last edited by 82SC; 07-10-2003 at 03:21 PM.. |

Ebay only has the dead and tired ones that cheap. Something of your car's caliber will command good money. You'd be crazy to sell that car for anything less than the 'teens (mid teens at that). . You have a nice, unique car.
If given a choice to sell a clean SC for the price of a slightly used Civic (since that's all I'd be able to buy if's decided to sell that low) I'll keep the SC - doesn't matter where the market goes You'll never find a comparable car in terms of quality or desirability for that price. If you do decide to unload at $10K, email me. I'll find a way... rjp

I think I'm going to keep it for awhile. Sometimes Gremlins pop in my head and get me to thinking about things in different ways. But last night when I left work and the SC started right up with that growl, I knew then that selling would hurt me to my heart.
