gear ratios for 67 911 normal 5 speed?
Any gearheads out there know the gear ratios for a 5 speed from a 67 911 normal? A normal 911 version, not an S-tranny.
Also, anyone know at what engine speed in RPM would the car be at going 60 mph 5th gear? I am searching for a longer gear before undoing my box and counting teeth! THanks! ![]() |

I beleive my stock tranny came with the following gears.
1: A 2: GA 3: M 4: S 5:ZA I have changed it to 1: A 2: GA 3: K 4: Q 5: V Works great for racing.

Wait a minute here.
I don't know if there was any difference between a 67 911 normal tranny and an S tranny? I would believe that the gear ratios for US and European cars would be different, but not until later years - at least around the mid 70's. I have had my 67 911 normal up around 130mph which is suppossed to be top end for the 911 normal. Peter Morgan's book indicates that the top end on the 67S was 137mph. I attribute the extra 7 mph top end to a 400 rpm higher redline (redline on the normal is 6,800 as compared to 7,200 on the S), not different gear ratio. |

My 65 911 has about a 120mph max speed at the 6800 redline. And it's probably actually only about 115mph since when I was going that fast the racing tires were of a slightly smaller rotating diameter. I figured my tranny was on the short side. It's nice to see what other 911's run at.

I'm looking in my 65 911's user manual and it looks like from the transmission diagram chart that the original 911's like mine - not the S type - have a 137mph top speed at 6800RPM - following the chart further up to 7200 RPM brings the theoretical top speed to 150mph!! Woah... that's pretty fast for these little cars!

My manual has a gear chart
I'll post the info when I get home. I had my 67 (somewhat normal) up to 110 mph last week, it was about 6000 rpms.
Shawn.

My 69 "S" came with A Ga O U Z which yields a top speed of 137.9 at 7000 (if it could get up there on 5th) with 205/50-15's.

I doubt that any of the early stock 2.0's could hit 150mph. It's a chart produced by the company trying to sell cars. It is probably slightly exagerated in order to make the performance numbers look at little better in comparing the 911's to other sports cars of the day. I would also note that without the front spoiler which didn't come along until 1970, the early 911's would start to get some serious front end lift at anything significantly north of 125 - especially the SWB's.
A few years ago I had my 70S with the front end spoiler up to around 135 and it was steady as a rock. Also, I had a 72 911T w/out the spoiler up around 125 and it was also seamed to hold pretty tight - but very windy in the cockpit... That's a targa. On a slightly separate note, I was in Ft Lauderdale a few months ago cruising up I-95 around 1:00am and had a mid 80's Alfa GTV jump me. I currently have a 2.4S engine with flow package and expensive head work in my 67 911. I must have surprised the **** out of him when I shot past him at 125mph. I slowed down and let him catch me, then we both took off together side by side. I couldn't pass him until I wound out 4th gear, and then I was able to lose him - but not with any great authority. I expect that he still is probably in wonder at how fast the early SWB 911's are. I on the other hand am very surprised the guy could hang with me as long as he did. I suspect he had something special going on under the hood. I can't believe a stock mid-80's GTV6 can be that quick. If so, I may have to buy one for $4k.... Anyone out there ever had an 80's GTV who can compare the stock performance numbers to an early 911? |

have to keep tire diamater in mind when talking about top speeds at a certain RPM. Mine was 130 at redline, now less due to lower profile tires.

OK home now
The transmission diagram on pg 92 of my cars manual indicates that;
1st is 11.34 A 2nd is 18.34 F 3rd is 22.29 M 4th is 25.26 S 5th is 28.24 X Now, as far as I know, my manual is original to my car and so is the trans. (per the certificate of authenticity) Doug is correct, I have 6JX15 fuchs with Bridgestone potenza 205 R15 60 series tires. They are a somewhat smaller diameter than 165 HR 15 stock tires and therefore change the rpm/mph ratio. And, Garrett, one of your questions was about rpm at 60mph in 5th. In my car it was at 3,400 on the way home this evening. Lastly, to all 67 911 normal car owners, you actually have a 140hp engine if you have the 901/05. Hope this helps, Shawn. ![]()

source quote
Bruce Anderson's Performance Handbook pg56; "The header/heater system developed for the 911S was then used on the 911 normal engine. The change in the exhaust system increased the horse power...from 130 to 140. Porsche felt that the difference between the S and the normal would not be enough and took steps to reduce the engine's power to the orginal 130hp."
Remove the 901/05 exhaust manifold restrictor rings, if they are still there, and you get the 10hp back. For the 901/06 you must change cams. Shawn. ![]()

Looking at my manual, for a "Type 911/2000" (mine is a 65) the stock gears should be:
12:34 18:32 23:28 26:25 28:23 Interesting that they differ from TYPE901/05's setup. I am not sure what the letters are, though. Or even if these are the actual gears in the box still... Thanks for the info about your road speed and RPM at 60mph... I think it's interesting to see where other cars are at! |

Garrett
It is imortant to note that; Porsche put the tachometer in the middle of the instrument cluster and the speedometer off to the right for a reason.
Drive with the engine power band and not the local speed constraints...you will be blocked by traffic anyway. The best rpm meter will be the seat of your pants real soon anyway, and that is the best method of p car work. Listen to the engine and Enjoy. Shawn. ![]()
