DIY Rattle Can Inspo - Rear Bumper Corrosion Edition

When I got my 83SC last summer I noticed a little rust jacking at the top of the passenger side rear bumper strip. I really wasn't in the mood to dig into it, I just dropped a chunk and just wanted to enjoy the machine and take care of some other odds and ends, maintenance.

Now, I'm gearing up for some more involved maintenance items. The kind where not having a rear bumper makes things a little easier. So I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.. 1, Practice removing rear bumper and 2, slowing/stopping corrosion

Maybe this might inspire some DIY bumper repair, since it seems to be a common theme.

Bumper off... I opted to remove at accordion. Thankfully all hardware was in good shape.

The worst of it...

Driver side, much better.. just a couple spots.

First pass at general clean up, see what im dealing with

By the way, does my muffler angle look pretty severe to you? Everything else lines up otherwise.

Self Etch Primer and Upol filler as-needed

A few rounds of sanding, paint, cleaning and wet sanding later..

Mocked up with valance...

By no means perfect and fortunately covered up mostly by bumperettes and rubber strips. but im pleased and I can rest a bit easier knowing the damage will be severely limited if not halted altogether.

Shout out to Express Paint for the close Helibronze Metallic L966 match.

That's a perfect match as far as I can tell.

Nice.

Hi
I think your rear bumper is made from an Aluminum Alloy.
If the correct primer is not used filiform corrosion, (clearly visible in your second photo), can occur between the aluminum and the primer.
Also etching of the aluminum with Alodine before priming can be helpful, in preventing corrosion and improving primer adhesion.
Hope this info helps.
Cheers
PS Apologies for any spelling issues !
