Another oil return line with headers question.
 

Hi all,

’79 911SC, engine is out of the car at the moment.

I recently picked up a Fabspeed header/heat/muffler setup and was expecting to need the earlier-style oil lines to clear the headers. While doing a mock-up on the engine stand to see how everything lines up, I noticed the primary tubes are not touching the stock oil return/crossover line at all - there’s good clearance.

Does this mean I’m in the clear to run these headers with the stock ’79 lines? I can’t fully check the fitment to the thermostat lines in the RR wheel well until the engine is back in the car, but based on the layout I don’t think it will be an issue.

Has anyone here run this Fabspeed setup with the factory SC lines and can confirm from experience whether clearance and heat are OK, or if you still ended up backdating the oil lines?

I can't remember the routing of the original lines on an SC, but the usual issue w/ Fabspeeds headers is the S hose from the tank to pump, It is very, very near the headers and needs to be protected or relocated.

Hi Bill, If it comes down to it. I will probably just replace the cross over metal lines and the rubber line to thermostat housing. when the engine is back on the car. Thanks for sharing your experience.

When I purchased my 78 the previous owner had installed a full Fabspeed RSR exhaust and had managed to keep the stock oil lines although they did make contact. It was not the cleanest install with them and I wouldn't recommend keeping it that way, but it will work in a pinch.

And as Bill said, the S hose will burn to a crisp if not addressed. I had to modify my hose a bit and then I installed a silicon heat sleeve over the S hose and a heat shield on both headers as well to protect my now dual plug lower coil on plug.

Every conversation I have with folks looking for a tuned exhaust system for their application will cover oil lines, heater hoses and any other possible item they may need to address when making this conversion. No surprises is the goal.
The FS design does not use the OE early Porshe locations or allow for the use of other mufflers. The passenger's side primaries sit right under the main oil tank line; that being your biggest concern. As for the OE hard oil lines, you would need to install the muffler to see where they may clash.

Tried mocking up again. I think the cross line is fine. The hose in wheel well will likely hit the header. That hose is stiff, not sure if we can manipulate it without damaging. bummer.

I recommend running backdated oil line. It keeps it clear of the muffler and multiple

No contact, ever! Reflective tape going on 3 seasons and still wrapped tight! I'll provide part#

Oil S hose wrapped end to end, clamps securing the adhesive heat tape nicely.

The trick to increased clearance is slight upward arc as you tighten clamps.

It gets tight up in there, after all the muffler and heat ducts are installed.

Since this is becoming a reference on oil line options, I'll add one other type of scavenge line that crosses over the top of the bell housing. I used this to avoid interference with headers and a 965 style on-engine oil filter. The under the bellhousing line interfered with the oil filter and RR shock. Either of these lines mate with the stock hose/hardline that leads to the external thermostat.

@Cherry Bomb Thank you for sharing those photos. The back dated lines are safe for the fabspeed application. I was hoping I can save a few bucks here. looks like I'd have to update both lines to clear the headers. The Wheel well line is unlikely to clear.
