Bumping The Rev Limiter in 5th Gear '87 Carrera

First all the disclaimers: I dont encourage such high speed runs especially in a car with almost all original suspension parts...it is just plain stupid. My car is an '87 Carrera Coupe bone stock, 92,356 miles, front and rear spoiler,New Bilstein HD Shocks, US ride height, 205/55/16 Front Yokohama Intermediates, 225/50/16 Rear. Used Garmin GPS for measuring max speed. It confirms my speedo being 10% off. Temp 91F heat index 99F, Wind 0 mph, Barometric 30.03, Humidity 52%. I was just curious how much performance the car had lost over the years and how accurate the Porsche top speed claim was. I bumped the rev in 4th at 6250 rpm indicated and 121 mph. I was shocked when the car pulled to 6250 in 5th at 149 mph. I would assume the speedo was pegged because of its error but the steering wheel blocks the view and I knew it was wrong anyway. The car felt solid to 125 mph. At 137 it felt uncomfortable. Just a bit of side to side drift. From that point on its just plain stupid! Just a note4 lanes of HWY and didnt pass one car during the attempt. I am not that crazy.

Yep, '88 Carrera, (at the time) about 125K miles, original shocks/struts, front spoiler only, 6250 in 5th (rev limiter doesn't cut in until about 6500. It felt totally fine until about 140, then it feels a little light in the rear (no spoiler).

Since then I've put new Sport Bilsteins on and that has made a huge difference, but I haven't checked top speed again, but 130 feels pretty good.

I can't wait until I can afford a tail.

Oh, and I had a Honda S2000 pacing me all the way to 150.

150 is damn fast, pretty scary, and a rush, I can't even imagine 200. ...someday

Steve...guess my tach is off a bit. I need to get my car to your guys for lowering and alignment. I am sitting about 1" higher than you. Thats alot of air passing under the car creating lift. I am probably just a whimp. Felt scarey to me above 130 mph. My C5 felt more stable at 196 mph but you cant compare a 2001 to a 1987. These P-cars are great fun!
