Cylinder head temperature sensor question
I recently replaced my cylinder head temperature sensor. Today, I went for a quick spin and after I took off with a first and second gear to 6K, the engine ran rough for a couple seconds, then died.
I pulled over and tried to restart it a couple times, but it was a no go. Then, I looked in the engine bay and the cylinder head temperature sensor wire had come off the connection. I reconnected it and it fired up. It snaps on and off with a tug. The only thing I can think of, is when revving to 6K, the engine torqued and the connection popped off. Does that sound reasonable? Edit, I replaced the two rear motor mounts, after I got home, and will replace the transmission mounts next weekend. Edit. I thought once the engine was warm, the CHT sensor was not needed for startup. |
No, when the engine is warm, that's when the CHT is most needed. If it is cut open, missing or disconnected, the ECU "thinks" the engine is dead cold. So if the engine is in fact warm, it gets too much fuel and dies.
When the engine is warm, you can even replace the CHT by a short, like a paper clip, and drive home. Now regarding your failure, the bad connection is certainly the reason, but how come the CHT connector is not locked? There's a metal clip that should hold everything in place. |
The metal clip is there and it snaps on and off with a firm tug.
With the wires 39 years old, I think they have a set to them. When I took off from a standing start, I took it up to 6K in first and second gears. It was then the engine died. My thought was the engine moved just enough to pull on the wire and disconnected. That said, URO CHT connector doesn’t feel like there’s quite as much engagement as with the factory CHT connector |
