65 911 ingition upgrade routes - I have a Delta MarkTen..?
I've looked at some of the other posts, but none are for some early cars that don't have electronic ignition to start with.
My 65 911 has "Delta MarkTen" box that does something fancy - is it a CD module? I have a standard coil, and still use points. What is an effective upgrade, since this Delta box is really old, and I don't want to be stranded with a failure. What is a reliable upgrade for my car that is not too expensive but will be effective (increase HP and reliability)?? And do they work with my tach??? Thanks as usual! ![]() |

The Delta Mark 10 was a pretty high quality CD ignition system in the late 60's to early 70's era. Colorado company, long gone now, as far as I have been able to tell. If your unit has a black (red?) pushbutton on one end, it is the desireable model. That button is a "bypass" switch, that puts the ignition back to normal points and coil mode in case of a field failure, or for timing purposes using a timing light not rated for 30 to 40 KV pulses.
My view would be to use it till it breaks, it's a good unit, probably as good or better than the Bosch or Permatune units. The step up would be to MSD, crankfire or the like, which is probably overkill for your needs. PS >>Any of the transistors or the SCR in the Delta unit can be replaced by something still available, I would think...;-) PPS>>> Keep it DRY! Do not let any water get inside. It should have rubber gaskets on the end plates, and the switch should be mounted on the bottom!!

It's interesting that when that button is pressed on the side of the Mark 10, the tachometer stops working although the engine will work. Why is this?
And, it is a Mark 10 B - is that better than the standard Mark 10 (which I had in there until about 1 year ago when it died after about 20 years of service!)??? Thanks for the info. |

I think the main difference between the Mk10 & the Mk 10B is the bypass circuit & button.
The reason that the tach does not work is because the pulse shaping network that is in there somewhere to make the tach work with the Delta Mk 10 is not switched out by the button, most likely. If you can locate that circuit and bypass it as well, the tach wil probably then work, until you push the button again....;-)
