Turnsignal Problem Solved

First, again thanks to you that offered advice.

Now, with but a week left until departure, friend came over to help track down why none of my turnsignals worked.

1. First thing first, checked out the grounds...all were good...hmmm. Next, likely suspect....4 way emergency hazards (bad switch??).

2. We concentrated there. After 2 hours of working every combination (losing power when the plug was accidentally pulled) no change. Was obvious that wasn't the problem. We tried another tack.

3. Put power across the circuits from the circuit that's hot all the time...hmm12.02 volts, not bad. Jumpered it to the turnsignals...bing! Have right and left turnsignals...work perfect...cool!

4. Put power across the circuit hot when the key is turned...hmmmm 11.78 volts...not bad, jumpered the turnsignals...no turnsignals...WTF???? Repeated process, same result.

5. Ran wire directly from the 17 fuse in the fuse box to the hot on start terminal on the 4-way....bing! Got turnsignals!!! Obviously there's a leak somewhere in the circuit...enough to drain .25 volts and keep the flasher from firing!

Easy job now...run new wire from fusebox to 4-way and bingo bango bongo...I'm back in business.

Next job....why do both turnsignal indicators light up when the turnsignal is on? In the process of previous problem I noticed one bulb wasn't out of the guage...thought "oh, that's why the right one doesn't light" -- hah PO got tired of seeing both on everytime he made a turn!...Just another PO story...sigh

I had the problem of "double time" flashing. I replaced the flasher with one from Autozone and the speed was then normal but both indicators would light for either direction and with the hazards neither indicator flashed! I then purchased the Hella relay from Pelican and all problems were solved. Indicators and flashing speed are now normal.

Well -- I'm amazed...you're awesome. As a matter of fact, the last flasher relay I used (and am using) is the one from (I can't believe it) Autozone! Man, was wondering why everyone didn't buy generic products...lol. Guess I know now! I'll buy the OEM one....awesome.

where exactly is this flasher relay? behind the dashboard? and how does the flasher switch come out on a 79 sc. In the Bentley manual it says the hazard switch is next to the radio, but on my 79 sc the hazard switch is next to the ignition.

Ron -- 2 ways to get to it, you can get to it from the trunk in front, or remove the left 2 guages (they just pull out) on the dashboard. When you look inside, you'll see a relay, that isn't it. The flasher relay is behind and below the first one you see. To make locating it simple, just turn on the 4 ways...you'll hear it clicking.

OBTW, mine have stopped working again. Someone turned on my 4 ways and locked the car...I was 300 miles away. My son was in the area, didn't have a key, so he removed all of the bulbs so the battery wouldn't run down. Now, turn signals no longer work again! Sighhhh.
