Motor meister's

Has anyone ever had a moter rebuilt them? I spoke to a guy about rebuilding a 71' 2.2T motor. The cost for stock was $3200. With goodies to put it somewhere closer to an E specs the cost goes to about $4200.

Do a search for Motor Meister on this forum. This should
be enough to convince you not to use them.

Oh oh, here we go again. Do a search on Motormeister. I have not used them and based on what I've read here I'll never do.

If you don't mind a guy in CA working on your stuff - because you live in Boston and all - call Tony @ TLG Porsche Service. When it comes to early 911s, there's NOBODY better. He's honest, fair and his work is impeccable. If you want your motor done right, call the best man for the job. TLG Porsche Service - (818)982-7610

Holy freakin'...
Listen, I used them. I have spent the last year recovering from the experience (e.g getting the car to run right). If you want to add stress to your life, use them. By the way, take the figure they quoted you and at least double it.

Clarification: I used MM, not who Mr9146 was referring to.

The regularity of this question has me laughing! Maybe Wayne should post it on top permenantly like he currently has the "Austin McCleary Benifit car Show" thread right now.

Never used them, so I'm no help, but I'm with Juan. Based on the threads, I wouldn't.

Along the same lines, there is a guy who has been advertising
in craiglist (for non Bay Area residents, it is a popular bulleting
board), saying that he can work on Porsche's and rebuild engines
for 1/2 the dealer price. So, out of curiosity, I ask for references.
Response:

"I have forgot more than most people will ever learn about 911's....peirod. I will not go to work for the dealer or other shops because they are a bunch of rip offs. I know how they work and how they pile up the door with cars out the door. I know and have worked along side major shops and will not name them. If you want to have work ...repair service on your car call me and I can show you a few of the many cars I own. To drop names is not good in my line of work. Then on the other hand you can go out and be cool and pay the 125 per hour and be cool and tell everybody you have your work done by so and so. If your serious and want your stuff repaired call. I have a shop and work by appointment only. I am an expert. Eddie Woo. "

Dude, you can't even buy all the correct parts at a discount for the total price they quoted you, does that tell you something?????

Over 50% of my work is by refferal. (I do not work on cars for a living). When people ask me for names of people that I have worked for so that they may contact them, I simply tell them that I wouldn't give out their name and no. and I'm reluctant to do the same for a past customer. Right then and there it gets decided whether I'm gonna do that job or not. If not, no big. There's more work than I can get to anyway.

If you have to ask a guy for a refferal before he works on your engine (see, I said engine this time), you don't know enough to be there. Go someplace else.

Milt,

Well said, but how do they get your name? I'll guess that in many cases, your customers refer them to you. IMHO, that is the type of guy I try to look for.

To say it another way, instead of asking for a references, ask those you trust who they use.

Mr914, by any chance do you have a connection to Tony? Related, maybe? he's not your dad, is he? if so you should include that little bit of info, common courtesy.....
If you are just a satisfied customer and not connected in any way, please disregard.

Buy Wayne's book, all the proper tools, and do it yourself! Trust me I'm currently in the process of doing this. As of today, I have everything completely disassembled. You can never get to know your car the way you will if you remove, tear down, and rebuild your engine. Just take your time, and follow all the steps.

I was just a little unsure as to if I could rebuild a motor myself. But I guess that I can not do much worse than MM, and I might learn a little in the process.

Observations

I just looked at the MM Page.

To rebuild my engine they want $2800. Add to that the cost of taking the engine out, putting it back and shipping it. I would guess 2 guys, 4 hours to R&R Engine (2*4*$60=$480). One guy, one day to tune, do valve adjusts etc (1*8*$60=$480). One shipment to MM (say $400).

Their basic cost is then about $4160.

In my case, for my top end only, I needed to replace 6 exhaust studs ($100), install Carrera tensioners ($500 due to extra parts for 73.5 CIS engine), updated idler arms ($100), replace a few tired oil line hoses ($100), all my valves were shot ($500). Needed to replace clutch/cable/etc ($500). Now my MM rebuild costs $5960.

This is more than I paid my local guy to do my top end. If we did crack the case, I am sure there would be some "extras" there as well but snce I did not do this work, I do not know.

Anyway, this is almost a doubling of their published cost. You can say some of these costs can be borne by the owner with no out of pocket cost, but where is your warranty then?

Still cheap? I think not.

One of the most humble statements I have ever read around here. I don't think everyone has to rebuild their own engine to earn their wings. Yet, If you have the time, are half way mechanical and stick to it, you can do it with help from here and the rebuilding book. On some tough areas, you can ask for someone to come by and help out. When you get done, you will have a pride that is unequalled. You can't buy that at any shop. Not even with a refferal.
