Lightbulb Cheapskates Unite!

A few recent threads have me thinking. There seem to be some parts that are ridiculisly expensive or simply unobtainable. Case in point: close to $300 for my steering bushing and spring!
Also the 911R tail lights, 911R decklid hinges, RS hood tie downs, etc.
Someone here recently found the RS hood tiedowns thru Thomas registry for $2.64 a peice.
I think if we focus our efforts and come up with alternatives it would benefit us all. Make some kind of database or something.
I am talking about parts unobtainable thru Pelican or dealer only parts.
What do you think?

This goes along with an idea I had for a thread.. "Whats the cheapest part you've put on your car" i.e something for JC whitney, autozone, etc.

I think my submission is the underdash A/C vent that is sold for +$75 other places available from the hot-rodders for 7$

Wish I knew of some others...

John do you need the 901 mount or 915 mount? (maybe they are the same?) I have an extra tranny mount. Let me know if you need it

How about the RS panel door handles. I thought I read somewhere that Fiat or someone made ones that were almost identical to the real ones, but under $5. True or false?

Not the same--that's the problem. It turns out my transmission mount rubber was in OK shape, it was the motor mounts that were shot. Thanks, though...

$3 terrycloth steering wheel cover I sewed on the $150 dino suede steering wheel when the suede got all gummy. I highly recommend this upgrade, btw -- 3 years and it's still dry and soft.

Back when I was playing with 914s a group of fellow enthusiasts organized a club called the CSOSOSC (cheap SOB's of southern california).
We have an e-mail thing kind of like rennlist only much smaller, heck we even have hats :-)
The whole idea is to share information pertaining to Porsches and saving money. If someone wats to buy something he posts it and we all contribute on where to find it at the best cost, possible substitutions, etc. Lots of bartering and trading of parts. Anytime one of us finds a potential parts car or parts listed on e-bay for cheap or any other time there's an opportunity to save a few bills we post it.

I'm officially on double secret probation since I bought the 911

Diff plate on 930 tranny is just the same plate that sits on the 915 which is just the same plate that sits on Porsche 924 early 5-speed which is same plate that sat on 935 gearbox :-)

Hmm. My NAPA starter was $64 plus $14 core charge (refunded).

I found a good solution to the hood shocks problem... with the long hood 911's I've read that the shocks don't last. I found a neat fix at Wal-Mart of all places. It's a latch that attaches to the hood shock... intended for use with hatchbacks... and it only cost $8.
