Performance ducktail?

I know there have been a lot of talk about the best ducktail to buy aftermarket. Has anyone bought the $299 one from Performance Products? Bottom line is I'm cheap (or poor), and I haven't seen a new one cheaper elsewhere. I have a family member who works in a body shop to prep and paint a spoiler for me. Any input?:)

Try Pelican. I bought my rear RS bumper from them. It's a Getty design. Perfect fit. They were the cheapest I could find.

Not sure where Performance sources their fiberglass; maybe from one supplier or several. The one I got from them a few years ago required many hours (how about 15?) of grinding, filing and adding filler to get it to fit with flush surfaces, even seam lines and matching corners. Their pieces might be better, the same or worst now. You won't know until you mount it up to your car. If you're close to them, I wouldn't hesitate returning ill-fitting pieces. Long distance shipping is more of an issue.

You might also try Getty Design or MA Shaw who manufacture their own (I'm pretty sure) and seem to have more consistent-fitting pieces. GT Racing and TRE also sell FG.

Some on this forum swear by Rennspeed. However, the rear RS bumper I bought from them needs a lot of work (major surgery I would say), even after about 4 hours of grinding and persuasion.

Webber sport has the best prices on F/G I have seen. I think $229?? They are not on the web - they advertise in all of the big P car mags

Pelican just had a group buy on the MA Shaw tail. I think it went for $315. You should check to see if it is still available.

I bought one of the MASHAW tails in the group buy. It was not exactly a bolt on item but it does seem to be good quality. I have it faired and primed now, just have to paint it. If you want I can send you some pics when it is done.

You may want to test fit it before painting it. If the fit is really poor return it. If you paint it most places won't take it back.

The finish on the Performance Products ducktail I bought was terrible, you might want to shop for a used one they sell for $175-200 and go pretty quick.

I have tried to buy a used one on e-bay and through Pelican classifieds, but always too late. Used ducktails are hot. Been looking for a used one for several months.

I'm buying one in the next few weeks too

Does anybody have one that really fit well out of the box?
How are the ones from Gt racing?

Do the ducks come with the latch hardware installed or is that our job?

Jeff Alton 07-15-2003 11:05 AM

You will have to install the latch. All fiberglass parts will require some "fitting". Get a good one and you will not have much to do!
