Just finished modelling headers
I just finished a marathon 4-hours session of CSG-modelling a custom set of headers for out B234L-bolted-to-Garrett-GT40 project.
I used exacty same pipe and bend dimensions as our local stainless supplier has on sale (SS2353, 44.5mm diameter). I also went to great lengths to assure that cylinders 1 & 4 and 2 & 3 merge as late as possible into each of two exhaust ports in GT40 turbo. I'l try to do some FEM calculations later if i find suitable software, but we are going to use extra holes in the head to strenghten things up (it's a heavy turbo). Only 90 and 45-degree bends used. If you want to send me the model, I can do an FEM (FEA) for the weight of the turbo. Though I think that you should plan on the turbo moving around a lot, just from thermal expansion. (I suppose you know this. . .never mind.) Anyway, for support, I would suggest a bracket coming straight off the engine block. Either that, or maybe throw some gussets on there. Thanx! I will use gussets and will find a way to support turbo trough extra structure bolted on cold part of turbo (probably bearing housing)...those pipes get pretty soft when they are glowing red and i don't trust them for supporting entire weight (i've seen headers that just "melted" down)
About FEM, model is done in CSG but modeller can also export mesh of objects...i'll see if i can get it in some exchangable format. I actually used shareware modeller and freeware raytracer to do this...Solidworks is way too expensive for me. |
IGES format would be great.
The meshing on my end is all automated, so no need for a meshed version. In fact a meshed version may cause problems. edit |
Anyone need translations, I can pretty much do anything, IGES, Unigraphics, STEP, parasolids, Solidworks... Catia even.
