The Porsche wave and other ramblings (again)

I know this has been discussed before but I'm just so amazed that the new 911 owners just so don't get the wave.

Had a client meeting NYC today, as I was leaving pulled my SC up next to a really nice looking, but very dirty, black 4S (told my passenger let's race the new 911), could see the buttery leather interior and hand sitching....any way gave him the wave, I'm in my client best not out joy riding, dude barely even cracks a smile, look in his eye said, what's this putz in a VW waving at me for?

Flip side, got numerous thumbs up and nods from people walking the NYC streets, in other cars, etc....Can Porsche launch a campaign, wave to the other friggin P-car owners even though you consider your car a piece jewlery and have no concept of the amazing history...and on that note a nice older crossing guard approached my car yesterday morning (whilst driving to work) and pointed to the targa script and said "do you know where targa comes from?" pumping myself up I replied of course the targa florio, he was very pleased that I knew the answer....

Ok enough story telling for today....

Adam

Is it appropriate to wave at all Porsches, or just 911s?

I learn something new every day. I thought "The Wave" was a Corvette thing. I was told to flash headlights at other P-cars.

Actually, when I'm driving the 911 and I see a Porsche, I flash. When I'm driving the 911 and I see a Vette, I wave. Haven't driven the Vette in 3 years (project car) but I plan to do the same thing when I drive it.

I flash at all P-cars, but especially 911's and 914's!

Dantilla-
I wave at all Porsches, whether or not I'm in mine (my wife doesn't get it, but my kids do - and they do the same)

While driving to Blackhawk Farms Raceway one weekend, we came up to a new Boxster (temp plate), and as we passed, Heather waved from the passenger side. Guy with girlfriend looked a bit unsure of what to do, but lifted fingers off the wheel to reply. This was on the backroads of western Illinois. We need to pick at them one by one, and hope it catches on with the water-cooled jewelery drivers No need to get made or sad, just let them wonder why we are so nice

And I like the crossing guard story!

here's mine...

My new neighbor has some young kids, two boys and a girl. Anyways, the older older boy (9) shows no interest in the 911 or my bike, but the 4 year old, points to the "race car" everytime he sees it. They came over one day as I was cleaning the garage, and I offered the 4 yr old static seat time, and he jumped right on it! He just sat there with bright eyes scanning the gauges....I think our 911's will be loved for a long time!

Of course he wanted to sit on the bike too!

Yeah, there's something about the new cars that makes people NOT REALIZE their history or performance. They don't own it for the pleasure or challenge of driving one. They own it as a status symbol, an accessory. Here in Boston, there is one street where they sort of congregate nice cars, brand new twin turbos etc. and park them in front of cafes. Then they sit and eat in the sun (which is fine) but all they do is LOOK at their cars. Or I guess they enjoy when passersby are looking at them. Makes me want to grab their keys and hand them to the first teenager that gets too close to peek inside. At least he would ENJOY taking it out for a spin.

Funny this would come up. On my way BACK to work this evening...(Don't ask) I pull up beside a Black(filthy)996. The guy is talking on his phone(Duh). I look over and his little Yorkie dog is going absolutely nuts! Guy never did look over. I waved anyways. I flash/wave at EVERY Porsche I see. I will not be discouraged!

I've been saying for a long time the flash or wave should only be an aircooled thing. I feel I have more in common with a guy in a VW bus than a 996, we both can turn a wrench. If you were broken down a 996 is not going to stop but a older VW will.

Anyways where I live there are too many Pcars to wave to all, and there is no way some lady in a Boxster (who's husband had a midlife crisis a year ago and gave her the car) is going to flash or wave.

I was in traffic the other day, driving the '89 Cab (with the top down) and noticed how many pedestrians smile, wave and give you a thumbs up.

I saw a Boxster, so I flashed the driver, smiled and gave a little wave...

... and he flipped me off.

From now on, Boxster drivers can go to hell! I'm only kidding, but it's weiners like that guy that are thinning the ranks of the wave/flash crowd.

I had a guy in a Boxster wave at me the other day in passing. I was so supprised, that I couldn't get a wave out in time before I passed him. He probably thinks I was some snob driving a 911 now... Some get it, some don't, so I just try to wave at all of them, and if they don't wave back, F*** 'em.

I had a lady come up to me at the drug store the other day and ask me "is that the new Porsche!!!" She was very excited to see my car and even more suprised to know that it is over 20 years old.

I can't count the looks of suprise I get when driving my car, especially since I'm 26 and look about 18. If they only knew...

I wave or flash if I am driving my 71. Dont get to many back but of course here in Cali you end up waving all the time. Gave a big wave to a Pepper Wagon the other day, but she was to busy gabbing on her phone and checking herself in the mirror to acknowledge, let alone watch the road. On the positive I had a guy in a 996 park next to me in a parking lot and give a freindly hello and some small chit chat. Said he really wanted to get an early 911.
Go figure.

This being Southern California....where all men (other than gay) are required to be ultra competitive, completely masculine, show us their superiority etc..... most of the time you wave and they just look at you like you are nuts.

So I dont wave anymore...even if I see a cool older Porsche, which happens several times an hour out here.

I do notice that the only Porsche drivers who wave or acknowledge me are older guys, grey hairs.... guys who have lived long enough and have dropped the competitive BS act.

Yea, Cali suck sometimes, but I'll waive to ya, Sonic, DB, and Dan! I mostly waive at just the air-cooled P-cars. I even waived at a guy in a SUV the other day cus he had a license plate frame that said POC member. Of course he looked at me like I was nuts cus I was in my Honda Accord. I kinda got excited and forgot what I was driving

I always try to wave to all Pcars but clearly get the most response from the air cooled crowd. Yesterday as I pulled onto an onramp, I flashed and waved to a nice SC cab headed the opposite way, I barely got my hand pulled in when a sweet 69 S targa(year evidenced by personalized tag)w/ sport muffler blows by like I'm standing still. The drivers arm extended out the top in a big wave. Man I had a smile on for 20 minutes afterwards. Faith renewed!

You CA boys and girls know the drill:

If you had to wave at all of 'em you couldn't drive cause your hands would never touch the wheel!

I wave I feel like it but ALWAYS wave back!

Exclamation SCREW THE NEW

I have to say that 90% of the people who are driving the new 911s are hose bags. Can't stand 'em, don't want 'em, don't need 'em. I used to wave, but after the blank stares and evil eyes I just gave up. Now, when I see a wet 911, I downshift and pass them with my sport muffler screaming ... makes it harder for them to hear the person on the other end of their phone. Of course, I drive a 914 so they look down at me by default. Their loss.

However, the air-cooled crowd never seems to let me down. In fact, I've been driving my 914 without a rear bumper for the last few days, and in that time I've had more "Nice Car!!" comments than I've had in the last 6 months. Go figure ...

And the Cayenne ... I was fortuante enough to chase one off the road with three other R Gruppers on a recent excursion up the 1 (you know who you are ). The four of us pulled over for a photo op a little ways up the road, and when the Cayenne rolled by the male driver refused to acknowledge the four hot-rod Porsches that chased him off of our terrain (the asphalt) and onto his (the dirt). HOWEVER!! His girlfriend sure enjoyed our little show as she was smilling and waving to us from the passenger seat.

Obviously SHE got a BIG wave!!

in So Cal there are just to many P-cars around. I don't wave unless it looks like the guy is a Pelican worthy type of driver. The others I just gas it and fly by with my little 3.6, 25 year old, 2325 lb. car. i like to piss of the guys who just spent $80K and think they have a faster P-car.

Dang... I hear the EXACT same story about people with new Vettes on corvetteforum.com. I guess no matter what car you drive, the folks who are willing to take the older cars into their garage, the folks who get grease in their hair and skinned knuckles, the folks who are just crazy enough to own the old beasts, tend to be the ones who appreciate what they have, and can relate to others who do.

As far as the air-cooled / water-cooled thing goes, I'd sure hate to have a hierarchy of what P-cars you flash / wave at and which ones you ignore. OK, I'm an air cooled fan, but I love 'em all. Even those 914's.

I wave to many a worthy p-car and get many nods, waves and in traffic conversations in return.

I just don't flash my lights cause that is my friendly method of letting people going the other direction that a speed trap awaits them.
